Priority Areas include… • DCCPS, Behavioral Research Program (BRP) • Biological mechanisms of psychosocial processes related to prevention, detection, treatment, and maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviors • Predictors of diet, weight, physical activity, and tobacco use • Risk perception and communication of health information to public, patients, and providers • Surveillance of communication outcomes and new media channels of communication • DCCPS, BRP, Tobacco Control Research Branch • Etiology, predictors, correlates, and determinants of tobacco use, nicotine dependence, and cessation • Tobacco prevention interventions at the individual, system, and population level • Tobacco cessation interventions at the individual, system, and population level Tobacco control interventions for underserved and at-risk populations • Other tobacco products, e.g., smokeless tobacco, cigars, roll-your-own, hookah, bidis, etc

General FOAs for Social and Behavioral Research • Parent R01: Research Project Grant http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-11-260.html • General announcement • NCI Omnibus R21: NCI Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Program, PAR-12-145, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/par-12-145.html • Purpose: to encourage exploratory and developmental research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. • NCI Omnibus R03: NCI Small Grants Program for Cancer Research PAR-12-144, http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-12-144.html • Purpose: supports small research projects on cancer that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources, including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology.

Specific FOAs: • Small Grants for Behavioral Research in Cancer Control (R03) • PAR-12-035 (R03), expires October 2012. • Purpose: to enhance basic and applied behavioral sciences research in the context of cancer control, with a secondary goal of attracting new investigators to the field from a variety of biomedical, behavioral and public health disciplines • Behavioral and Social Science Research on Understanding and Reducing Health Disparities • PAR-10-136 (R01) • PAR-10-137 (R21) • Purpose: Behavioral and social science research on the causes and solutions to health and disabilities disparities in the U. S. population. Emphasis is placed on research in and among three broad areas of action: 1) public policy, 2) health care, and 3) disease/disability prevention.

Specific FOAs: Epidemiology, Diet and Physical Activity Assessment • Small Grants Program for Cancer Epidemiology PAR-12-039 (R03) • Purpose: to provide support for pilot projects, testing of new techniques, secondary analyses of existing data, development and validation of measurement methods, linkage of genetic polymorphisms with other variables related to cancer risk, and development of innovative projects for more comprehensive research in cancer etiology and epidemiology. • Improving Diet and Physical Activity Assessment PAR-12-197 (R21)PAR-12-198 (R01) • Purpose: encourages innovative research to enhance the quality of measurements of dietary intake and physical activity
