  1. DigitDetectives Solving the Mystery of Number Sense

  2. What is Number Sense? • Number Sense describes a cluster of ideas, such as the meaning of a number, ways of representing numbers, relationship among numbers, the relative magnitude of numbers, and skill in working with them.

  3. Number sense is not a discrete set of skills to be taught during a unit of study. • Number sense is a part of children’s daily mathematical lives and it slowly grows and develops over time. • Children grow in number sense when they are allowed to explore, and manipulate numbers, and when they are encouraged to solve problems in multiple ways.

  4. Picture Talk Look at attributes of things in a picture (sizes, positions, clothing, shapes, colors) Make up number sentences that match the pictures.

  5. Number Bonds and Bonding • Number bonds are like fact families. [7, 3, 4] is an example of an addition and subtraction family or bond. • Number bonds help children to visualize the whole-part-part relationship of a number. • When we talk about number bonds, we “bond” two of the numbers to get the third number

  6. Model Drawing A systematic approach to solving word problems. Modeling drawing involves an 4 to 8 step plan that allows a student to set up a visual model to get through the language and challenge of the problem.

  7. Number Sense in a Nutshell Number sense is developed not taught Number sense develops gradually as a result of exploring numbers It is learned informally and formally Number sense involves working with quantities rather than symbols It is language driven with daily discussions To help children develop number sense we must ask questions, not give answers and allow them time to think, reason, discuss and justify

  8. Now let’s go beDigit Detectives and finish solving the mystery of number sense! • Kindergarten families to blue hall • First grade families to purple hall • Second grade families to green hall • The room you will go to first is the first number on your ticket!
