  2. What is PoE(Power over Ethernet)? PoE refers to the ability to carry electrical power over a standard Ethernet cable-the same one used today for transferring data. PoE allows IP telephones, WLAN APs(Access Points) and Web Cams to receive power as well as data over existing LAN cabling, without any requirement to modify the existing Ethernet infrastructure. After ratification of the IEEE802.3af -2003 standard on June 2003 for 12.95W delivery to PD, growth in PoE devices and installation has been increased, also IEEE802.3at-2009 known as PoE+ or PoE Plus for higher power delivering 25W to PD was also ratified 2009. LAN LAN is a computer network that interconnects computers in a limited area such as home, school, computer laboratory or office building. ARCNET, Token Ring and other technology standards have been used in the past, but Ethernet over twisted pair cabling, and Wi-Fi are the two most common technologies currently used to build LANs.

  3. Conventional LAN Structure Up to 100m Most of the remote terminals get power from AC-DC Adapters and they are not reliable in connections and expensive in installing AC outlet near them especially when installing terminals outdoors, like on the roofs or high on poles.

  4. PoE enabled LAN Structure With PoE enabled, this portion(individual power supply for terminal) can be eliminated and simplified as the structure shown next page by installing PSE between Ethernet Switch – Cable and PD between Cable – Terminal and power can be transferred to terminal through Ethernet Cable together with data.

  5. PoE enabled LAN Structure PSE PD PD PD Up to 100m PD

  6. Key Benefits of PoE enabled LAN? • Installation Cost Savings • Eliminates the need for electrical outlet installation • Dramatically reduces cost of deployment-saving up to $1,000 per PD • No need for bulky AC power adapter • Simplifies Installation • Uses a single Cat5/5e/6 cable for both data and power • Centralized Power Backup • Continuous operation during power interruptions • Centralized Power Management • Devices can be remotely powered down during periods of low usage or for security purposes • SAFE Power • Will not damage Non-PoE devices or legacy peripherals

  7. PoE ingredients There are two kinds of products, PSE(Power Sourcing Equipment) and PD(Powered Device) to provide PoE enabled LAN. PSE(Power Sourcing Equipment) Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) is a device such as a switch that provides power on the Ethernet cable. The maximum allowed continuous output power per cable in IEEE 802.3af is 15.40 W. A later specification, IEEE 802.3at, or PoE+ offers 25.50 W. When the device is built in a switch, it's called an endspan. Otherwise, if it's an intermediary device between a non PoE capable switch and a PoE device, it's called a midspan. An external PoE injector is a midspan device. PD(Powered Device) A Powered Device (PD) is a device powered by a PSE and thus consumes energy. Examples include wireless access points, IP phones, and IP cameras. Many Powered Devices have an auxiliary power connector for an optional, external, power supply. Depending on the PD design, some, none, or all power can be supplied from the auxiliary port, with the auxiliary port sometimes acting as backup power in case of PoE supplied power failure. PDs are usually built in WAP, VoIP, Web Camera and for the legacy devices without built in PD, PoE function can be enabled by Splitter type PDs.

  8. PSE(Power Sourcing Equipment) Products Endspan PSE An Endspan PSE typically injects power on the data pairs (3 and 6, 1 and 2) and is available for 10/100Base-T and 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet sources. A Ethernet Switch with built in PSE function can be an Endspan PSE. Midspan PSE A Midspan PSE is installed between a non-PoE switch and the powered device. It is limited to injecting power on the unused pin-pairs (4 and 5, 7 and 8) in a 10/100Base-T network. A midspan PSE used in conjunction with a non-powered switch gives the flexibility of inserting power where it is needed in an existing network and of modifying PoE delivery on a port-by-port basis. Midspans also simplify maintenance by retaining the separation between data and power management. Data, managed exclusively by the unpowered switch, flows through the midspan unmodified while the midspan injects PoE and manages power delivery.
