  1. Training Program for a Two-year old Thoroughbred AN S 313 Britt Gulbrandsen

  2. Introduction • In a good training program, there should be three phases • Basic Training • Strenuous Training • Sprint Training

  3. Basic Training Definition: training sessions performed at 200 – 500 meters/minute Heart rate = 180 beats/minute Very little accumulation of lactate in the blood. Basic training improves the aerobic capacity of the animal while also developing their leg strength that they will need when they are strong enough to start competing.

  4. Basic Training • Basic training should last 2 months, with 3 different training sessions during the week. • Jogging • With a rider • Treadmill with 10% incline

  5. Basic Training

  6. Strenuous Training Definition: training sessions performed at speeds higher than 600 meters/minute, which also results in lactate accumulation in the blood. Stimulate contractions in the fast-twitch muscle cells, allowing muscles to execute high exertion. Should stimulate contractions and anaerobic metabolism in fast-twitch muscles. Strenuous training should last 4 weeks

  7. Strenuous Training

  8. Sprint Training • Definition: Training sessions at or near racing speeds • Speeds at or above 400 – 1600 meters/minute • Never combine anything done during basic training with sprint training. • Heart rate = 210 – 230 beats/minute • Training schedule should be similar to strenuous training other than: • Trot and Canter 2000 – 3000 meters on slow days • Sprints done on all other days

  9. Conclusion Basic Training Strenuous Training Sprint Training
