  2. The author of To kill a Mockingbird precisely zero other books. Lee loved nineteenth-century British authors best, and once said that her ambition was to become "the Jane Austen of south Alabama."

  3. When Lee was in Kinder Garten she befriended an eccentric young boy named Truman Capote-streckfus person

  4. Harper Lee was an unruly tomboy She fought on the playground She talked back to teachers She was bored with school and resisted any sort of conformity

  5. In high school Lee was fortunate to have a gifted English teacher, Gladys Watson Burkett, who introduced her to challenging literature and the rigors of writing well.

  6. Lee loved nineteenth-century British authors best, and once said that her ambition was to become "the Jane Austen of south Alabama."

  7. In 1944 Lee left home for Huntingdon College a women school in Alabama She joined sorority The following year she enrolled in Law school at the university of Alabama

  8. In 1949 she quit Law school and joined to her kinder friend Truman Capote in New York city to pursue a career as a writer.

  9. Father: Frances Cunningham Finch her father, a former newspaper editor and proprietor, practiced law and served in the Alabama State Legislature from 1926 to 1938

  10. Before A.C. Lee became a title lawyer, he once defended two black men accused of murdering a white storekeeper. Both clients, a father and son, were hanged

  12. AWARDS: *1961 Lee was awarded the Pulitzer Prize *the following year year it was made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Gregory Peck, who became one of Lee's close friends.

  14. When Truman wrote his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, under the pen name Truman Capote, he based the tomboyish character of Isabel on his friend Harper Lee. 

  15. Her fans waiting for the next novel Lee finally allowed for her famous work to be released as an e-book in 2014. She signed a deal with HarperCollins for the company to put out To Kill a Mockingbird in a e-book and a digital audio editions

  16. *on July 11,1960 she PUBLISHED a novel that became an instant classic *Inspiring Millions with it’s unique blend of humor and sharp social observations.

  17. Mockingbirdwent on to sell 30 million copies in 18 languages. Harper Lee's book had become an American treasure. Lee has stated that Mockingbird was not an autobiographical novel, but that she borrowed scenes and characters from her childhood to flesh out Maycomb's landscape. 

  18. To Kill A Mockingbirdtells the story of an honorable Alabama lawyer, Atticus Finch, who defends a black man named Tom Robinson against a false accusation of rape.

  19. Theme: is the book’s exploration of the moral nature of human beings that is whether people are essentially good or essentially evil. The voice: is embodied by Atticus Finch, who is virtually unique in the novel in that he experienced and understood evil without losing his faith in the human capacity for goodness.

  20. Symbol: in this story of innocents destroyed by evil, the “mockingbird “comes to represent the idea of innocence. Thus to kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence.

  21. Jean Louise “scout” finch- she is the narrator and protagonist of the story Atticus Finch- Scout and Jem’s father, a lawyer in May comb descended from an old local family Jeremy Atticus “Jem” finch- Scouts brother and constant playmate at the beginning of the story

  22. Arthur “Boo” Radley- A recluse who never sets foot outside in house, boo dominates the imaginations of Jem, Scout and Dill. Bob Ewell- a drunken mostly unemployed member of Maycomb’s poorest family. In his knowingly wrongful accusation that Tom Robinson raped his daughter, Ewell represents the dark side of the south: ignorance, poverty, squalor, and hate filled racial prejudice

  23. Charles Baker “Dill” Harris- Jem and Scout’s summer neighbor and friend. Dill is diminutive, confident boy with an active imagination. He becomes fascinated with Boo Radley and represent the perspective of childhood innocence throughout the novel.

  24. Miss Maudie Atkinson- the finches neighbor , a sharped-tongued widow, and an old friend of the family. Miss Maudie is almost the same age as Atticus younger brother, jack. She shares Atticu’s passion for justice and is the children’s best friend of among Maycomb’s adult.

  25. Calpurina- The finches black cook. Is a stern disciplinarian and the children’s bridge between the white world and her own black community.

  26. Aunt Alexandra- Atticu’s sister, a strong-willed woman with a fierce devotion to her family. Alexandra is the perfect Southern lady, and her commitment to propriety and tradition often leads her to clash with scout.

  27. Mayella Ewell- Bob’s Ewell abused, lonely, unhappy daughter. Though one can pity Mayella because of her overhearing father, one cannot pardon her shameful indictment of Tom Robinson.

  28. Tom Robinson- the black filled accused of rape. Tom is one of the novel’s “mockingbird” an important symbol of innocence destroyed by evil. Link Deas- Tom Robinson’s employer. In his willingness to look past race and praise the integrity of Tom’s character, Deasepitomizes the opposite of prejudice.

  29. Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose- An elderly, ill tempered,racist woman who lives near the finches. although Jem believes that Mrs. Dubose is a thoroughly bad woman, Atticus which she battles her morphine addiction

  30. Mr. Walter Cunningham- A poor farmer and part of the mob that seeks to lynch Tom Robinson at the jail Mr. Cunningham displays his human goodness when scouts politeness compels him to disperse the men at the jail.

  31. Walter Cunningham- Son of Mr. Cunningham classmate of Scout. Walter afford lunch one day at school and accidentally gets scout 's in trouble.
