  3. Scale Analysis • Scale refers to your point of view or the scope of your observations as you are analyzing something…it may be broad or very specific (“global to local”). • Synonym: perspective • P. 14 - 15

  4. Rate of Natural Increase • “RNI” • Depicts the annual growth rate for a country or region as a percentage increase. Calculated by subtracting the # of deaths from the # of births in a given year. • SYNONYM: Population growth • Text p. 18

  5. TOTAL FERTILITY RATE… • Abbreviated “TFR” • Measures the fertility of a population by calculating the average # of children a woman will have in her child bearing years. • SYNONYM: reproduction rate • Text – p.19

  6. POPULATION DENSITY… • This is a measure of how crowded a place is (city; nation; state, etc). It measures the average # of people per square mile. • SYNONYM: crowdedness • TEXT PAGE: Not specifically defined in text, however, we will study various types of pop. Density throughout the year in various chapters…this one you probably had to look up!

OVERURBANIZATION… • Occurs when the urban population grows more quickly than the support services available to them (housing, transportation, waste disposal, & water supply). • Sentence use: The slum of Dharavi is a good example of overurbanization in India b/c the gov. is unable to provide adequate services for its inhabitants. • P. 23
