First Generation Database Technology • The network and hierarchical data model • There is no clean separation between the logical structure of the data and the way in which it is physically implemented • The database language manipulate only one record at a time • There is no theoritical foundation for hierarchical and network data model

  3. Second Generation Database Technology • Based on relational data model • Inappropriate for representing the complex structures which exist in the real world

  4. Third Generation Database Technology • Object-relational and object model • Allow more information to be represented by incorporating the facility of object-oriented programming languages • Users can extend the type of system to include new types specially tailored to their applications
