  3. Laser Cut Frames for Strip Planking These templates will be used to make a .dxf CAD file for laser cutting frames with about a 3/8” width from 1/8” white birch plywood. A t-Rail will be provided to hold frames upright at correct spacing. A double layer keelson will lock the frames in place so that planking can be started within minutes of set up. 1/8” x ¼” hard balsa or basswood is recommended for the bottom that is glued with either CA , Elmer’s or Gorrilla fast drying glue. Sides may be planked with wider pieces of 1/16” or even 1/32”

  4. The flat sides can be planked with wide sheets of1/16” hard balsa, basswood or mahogany

  5. Preliminary frame layouts

  6. Dave Gallagher’s Steam Launch

  7. The bottom is planked with 1/8” x ¼” or wider strips due to complex curves. Fewer frames may be used in areas where little change is from frame to frame to save weight. Bulkheads can be placed over some frames for improved appearance. Motor mounts may be added to frames to economize on weight. The keelson is to be precut for the motor shaft to save effort after planking.

  8. The deep forefoot breaks the water and contributes to its speed

  9. Building board rotated for easier planking of sides

  10. Tapes can be used to hold sides to bottom

  11. Power unit may be steam, electric or gas

  12. Seats and grates add nice touches
