  1. Mars Montgolfiere Microaerobot Looking for life and Water in the Red Planet Víctor Ortega (TMSE President) marte@incia.es Cayetano Santana Gil (TMSE Vice-President, OEPT member) tano@oept.org Pablo Sarasa (OEPT Engineering Manager, TMSE member) pablo.sarasa@space.alcatel.fr Daniel Slepikas (OEPT President, TMSE member) daniel@oept.org

  2. AGENDA 1. Introduction 2. The Background 3. The Organization 4. The Project 5. Conclusions TMSE - OEPT

  3. Introduction • This is not “just” another Mars mission • Demonstrate that everybody can participate in space exploration • Professionals and Non Professionals • Using Internet to spread their knowledge • Selected Project: Mars Montgolfiere Microaerobot • Mission Statement: “To send an Aerobot to Mars to investigate the existence of water and life” • First we will test the mission here in Earth TMSE - OEPT

  4. AGENDA  1. Introduction 2. The Background 3. The Organization 4. The Project 5. Conclusions TMSE - OEPT

  5. The Background • The TMSE (The Mars Society - Spain) had the initial idea at the end of 2000: Start a Mars Mission as a good way to advertising and motivate people to join the society • In 2001 TMSE and OEPT (Space for Everybody Org.) decided to cooperate in this endeavor • This Summer the project organization was established TMSE - OEPT

  6. AGENDA  1. Introduction 2. The Background 3. The Organization 4. The Project 5. Conclusions  TMSE - OEPT

  7. The Organization Who we are • The TMSE (The Mars Society - Spain) • OEPT (Space for Everybody Org.) • Space professionals from Industries, Agencies and Universities • Space Amateurs • Curious People • Countries: Argentina, Canada, England, France, Italy, Mexico and Spain. TMSE - OEPT

  8. The Organization Main Obstacles Motivation Communication Communication Decision Making Decision Making • Project done in a free time basis • We are not paying money • We are not offering a Degree • Mars Mission with a Scientific and Technologic Goal • Possibility to work with space professionals from agencies, industries or universities with very different backgrounds • Learning process TMSE - OEPT

  9. The Organization Main Obstacles Motivation Communication Decision Making • People from different countries and cultures • Different languages • Internet offers us the possibility of virtual Meetings thanks to IRC • The E-mail is our main communication tool • The official languages are written Spanish and written English they are easier to understand than oral Spanish or oral English TMSE - OEPT

  10. The Organization Main Obstacles Motivation Communication Decision Making • Everybody participates but we cannot vote for everything • The E-mail forum is used by participants to discuss the ideas • A Board takes the decisions taking into account everybody’s thoughts and common sense TMSE - OEPT

  11. The Organization TMSE - OEPT

  12. AGENDA  1. Introduction 2. The Background 3. The Organization 4. The Project 5. Conclusions   TMSE - OEPT

  13. The Project • Mars Montgolfiere Microaerobot - GANIMA • Mission Statement: “To send an Aerobot to Mars to investigate the existence of water and life” • Two Objectives: • To operate a scientific payload which will look for water and life in Mars • To proof the successful deployment of a solar balloon in Mars TMSE - OEPT

  14. The Project • The Balloon • Hot Air Balloon: Montgolfiere • Similar to the one that Pioneer Astronautics Tested in the upper Earth Atmosphere • Sealed in a capsule with a volatile liquid such as water, methanol, or ammonia pre-inserted in the balloon bag • All these fluids have molecular weights lower than CO2 • These will increase the payload capability without the need of carrying all the gas like in superpressure balloons TMSE - OEPT

  15. The Project • The Mission • To operate a scientific payload which will look for water and life in Mars • It is envisioned to carry small penetrators that will be dropped from the gondola • These will increase the life time of the mission while achieving the science objective • To proof the successful deployment of a solar balloon in Mars TMSE - OEPT

  16. AGENDA  1. Introduction 2. The Background 3. The Organization 4. The Project 5. Conclusions    TMSE - OEPT

  17. Conclusions • Our GOAL • Demonstrate that everybody can participate in space exploration • Professionals and Non Professionals • Using Internet to spread their knowledge • Promote cooperation rather than competition TMSE - OEPT

  18. Conclusions • Our Project • Selected Project: Mars Montgolfiere Microaerobot • Mission Statement: “To send an Aerobot to Mars to investigate the existence of water and life” • Scientific objective • Technologic objective • Earth mission first TMSE - OEPT
