  2. Energy • Energy is another way of saying fuel, just like the fuel source of a car is gasoline. • The fuel source (energy source) for the body is calories and we acquire these calories through food and drinks.

  3. Healthy Eating • Use moderation • Avoid fats (butter, oils, sugars, trim fat) • Avoid fast food – greasy • Limit carbohydrates later in the day • Eat from all food groups • Limit frying your food – use cooking spray (steam your food, BBQ, bake, boil, microwave)

  4. Energy Intake/Expenditure • Energy intake is the amount of calories that we consume throughout the day. • Energy expenditure is the amount of calories that we use throughout the day (metabolism & physical activity)

  5. Energy Balance Scale: Positive, Negative or Nil

  6. Positive Energy Balance • Positive energy balance occurs if the amount of calories (cal) eaten is higher than the amount of calories burned • Results in weight gain

  7. Negative Energy Balance • Negative energy balance occurs when more calories are burned than the number of calories which are eaten • Results in weight loss

  8. Nil Energy Balance (equal/equal) • Weight maintenance is achieved by burning the same amount of calories that are eaten throughout the day
