  1. CSc 8900/9900 Research inComputer Graphics, Visualization and Human-Computer Interaction Ying Zhu Associate Professor Department of Computer Science Georgia State University

  2. About Me • Joined the CS department in 2003 • Received my PhD from George Mason U • Director of Hypermedia and Visualization Lab since 2006 • http://www.cs.gsu.edu/yzhu

  3. My Research Interests • 3D Computer Graphics • Data visualization • Data mining and visualization • Human-computer interaction

  4. Outline of this talk • Overview of computer graphics and visualization • My courses • My research projects

  5. Computer graphics • 3D graphics are everywhere: movie, TV, advertisement, architecture, CAD, etc.

  6. Computer graphics • Graphics hardware is more powerful and cheaper than ever

  7. Advanced visual interface • Advanced visual interface will be crucial for future digital products • Traditional interface will be replaced by more visual, direct manipulate user interface

  8. Data visualization • Information visualization

  9. Research problems • How to make 3D games more adaptable to mobile device? • How to speed up physics simulation in 3D graphics programs? • Parallel processing? • How to better manage very large scale terrain databases? • E.g. large scale online multi-player virtual worlds • How to deal with synchronization problems in online multi-player games?

  10. Research problems • How to better support online collaborative data visualization design? • E.g. Wikipedia of data visualization • How to automatically generate visualization designs? • How to better visualize massive data sets in your own research field?

  11. Graphics/visualization/HCI Courses • CSc8820: Advanced Graphics Algorithms • CSc6820: Computer Graphics Algorithms • Real-time graphics, OpenGL, GPU programming • CSc6840: Computer Graphics Imaging • 3D modeling • CSc6841: Computer Animation • CSc6730: Scientific Visualization • CSc6720: Human Computer Interaction

  12. My Research projects • 3D Computer Graphics • Vehicle-terrain interaction • 3D graphics simulation for neuroscience • Data visualization • Text mining and visualization • Large scale visualization wall • Visualization of neurons • Computer security visualization • Graphical password

  13. Realistic Simulation of Vehicle-Terrain Interaction • Physically realistic simulation of vehicle terrain interaction

  14. AnimatLab • Biologically realistic simulation of animal behavior

  15. Example: simulating crayfish escape behavior

  16. Visualizing neurons • Visualization of Neurons and Neuron circuits

  17. Computer Security Visualization • Computer security data visualization

  18. Graphical password • Using pictures as passwords • Less vulnerable to conventional attacks • Suitable for mobile devices • Is it really more secure than text passwords? • How to break a picture password? • Interesting user behavior patterns – vulnerable to behavior based attacks?

  19. Large scale visualization wall

  20. Text mining and visualization • Visualizing the readability and complexity of text documents

  21. Text mining and visualization • Use Latent Semantic Analysis to identify patterns in the documents
