  17. Corrida de Toros (Bull Fighting) • Originated in Spain and can be traced back to 711 A.D. • First started off as a sport for the aristocracy, whom rode on horses. After the king banned the sport to the aristocracy in 1724, commoners took it on as their own. But since they couldn’t afford horses, they developed the practice of dodging the bull on foot. (Hierarchal diffusion) • Millions gather every year to watch the bullfights.

  18. Fiestas • Fiestas are large festivals that the whole town participates in. • They usually honor one of the patron saints. • They include processions, bullfighting, fireworks, and the wearing of regional costumes.

  19. Semana Santa (Holy Week) • Most Spaniards are Catholic and the most important holiday is Easter/The Passion of Christ aka Semana Santa. • It begins with Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) and ends with Lunes de Pascua (Easter). • The holiday dates back to the 18th century.

  20. Physical Environment • Spaniards eat food specialized to their region ex. Paella • Those living in cities take 3 to 4 week vacations in the mountains or on the coast to escape the heat. • Spain has a good climate for bulls to live which has resulted to the entertainment of bull fighting.
