  2. Determining Staffing Needs • What are effective ways to appropriately determine your staffing needs? • What strategies should a principal/school employ to recruit highly effective staff?

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Act (Things you can’t ask in an interview!) • Skin color/complexion • Religious affiliation • The applicant’s gender, marital status, name of spouse, ages of children • If the applicant has a disability • If the applicant has been arrested; however, you can ask if they have ever been convicted of a crime

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Act (Things you can’t ask in an interview!) • Any previous name they may have used • Their birthplace, or the birthplace of their parents or spouse • Their birthdate or certificate of naturalization papers, etc. • Submission of an applicant’s photo before hiring • If the applicant is a citizen of a foreign country; however, you can ask if they are a citizen of the United States

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Act (Things you can’t ask in an interview!) • The applicant’s native language; however, you can ask how many languages they speak • Any questions relating to the applicant’s relatives • Clubs, societies, and lodges they are members of; however, you can ask what organizations they feel are pertinent to the job • What are strategies the interviewer can use to find out this information without asking these questions?

  6. Orientation and Development of New Teachers • Teacher retention is a very important aspect of a principal’s job. • When you are the principal of ABC school how are you going to develop/support new teachers?

  7. Staff Discipline • Describe the difference between handling discipline issues between non-certified and certified staff. • What steps does a principal take, once he/she decides that a person needs help in making another career choice, i.e. dismissal proceedings.
