Synopsis: • Increasing cases of masonry defects in construction • Lack of consistency in the quality of building materials • Use of inappropriate building materials for masonry works • Need to specify economical and durable materials for masonry construction • Need to sensitize the market on availability of alternative quality products

  5. Causes of masonry defects: • Sulphate attack • Corrosion of embedded fixtures • Dry shrinkage • Quality of brick/blocks • Crystallization of salts from block/brick • Weather/climate action
