  1. Global Dimming

  2. First discovered in 1995… Global dimming is the phenomenon that the amount of sunlight falling on the earth’s surface is declining.

  3. TheDiscovery • The discovery of Global Dimming began 40 years ago, in Israel with the work of a young English immigrant called Gerry Stanhill. For a year Gerry collected data from a network of light meters the results were as expected. But twenty years later, in the 1980s, Gerry decided to repeat his measurements to check that they were still valid. There was a very serious reduction in sunlight – 22%

  4. THE PAN EVAPORATION RATE • PROF GRAHAM FARQUHAR (Australian National University): “It's called pan evaporation rate because it's evaporation rate from a pan. Every day all over the world people come out in the morning and see how much water they've got to add to a pan to bring it back to the level it was the same time the morning before”

  5. Energy of the photons hitting the surface, the actual sunlight, that kicks the water molecules out of the pan and into the atmosphere. • A decline in pan evaporation over Russia, United States and Eastern Europe. • The pans had on average, evaporated about a hundred millimeters less of water in the last thirty years.

  6. Causes… • Changes in the Earth's atmosphere. • Burning fuel produces visible pollution, tiny airborne particles of soot and other pollutants. • The Maldives were used to test whether pollution and global dimming were connected

  7. Maldives Project INDOEX

  8. INDOEX showed pollution particles were having an effect on the clouds and turning them into giant mirrors • Polluted clouds were reflecting more light back into space due to them having greater numbers of smaller particles and preventing the heat of the sun getting through. This was the cause of Global Dimming.

  9. Case Study – Ethiopia • The 1984 Ethiopian famine shocked the world • The Sahel region has always relied on a seasonal monsoon. • Every summer, the heat of the sun warms the oceans north of the equator. This draws the rain belt that forms over the equator northwards, bringing rain to the Sahel. But for twenty years in the 1970s and 80s the tropical rain belt consistently failed to shift northwards - and the African monsoon failed.

  10. How does this relate to Global Dimming? • Pollution from Europe and North America affected the properties of the clouds in the northern hemisphere. • The clouds reflected more sunlight back to space and this cooled the oceans of the northern hemisphere. • The tropical rain bands moved southwards tracking away from the more polluted northern hemisphere towards the southern hemisphere.

  11. This suggests is that the droughts in the Sahel in the 1970s and the 1980s may have been caused by pollution from Europe and North America. • What came out of our exhaust pipes and power stations contributed to the deaths of a million people in Africa, and afflicted 50 million more.

  12. The Tragedy of 9/11 • During the immediate time after the 9/11 tragedy it was possible to see what the world would be like without Global dimming. • For three days after the 11th virtually all commercial aircraft in the US were grounded • Temperature records were gathered from all over the USA.

  13. During the three days there was a lack of clouds, lack of contrails, warmer days and cooler nights. • This indicates that during the 3 day period there was a sudden drop in Global Dimming contributed from airplanes. • During the grounding the temperature range jumped by over a degree Celsius.

  14. The problem... OUR WORLD = GLOBAL DIMMING + GLOBAL WARMING

  15. We cannot counteract global warming through allowing global dimming even though they balance each other out. • Huge impact on human health • Affect the climate

  16. The Real Solution • Tackle the root cause of both global warming and Global Dimming - the burning of coal, oil and gas.
