  1. The Spirit That Controls Us “Do not eat the bread of a selfish man, or desire his delicacies; For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, ‘Eat and drink!’ But his heart is not with you.” (Prov. 23:6-7).

  2. This Lesson Is Not Mystical • Not talking about being possessed by demons. • Or even by the Holy Spirit. • Just the attitude that we choose to be dominant in our life. • We do have some control over that.

  3. Romans 8:15 • “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’” • What did a slave have to fear? • Abba! A term of endearment. No “Thee, thou”. • Gal. 4:6-7. We serve thru love, not fear.

  4. I Cor. 2:12 • “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God.” • The “spirit” of the world. NOT! • Prov. 3:5-6 • The “word”, but not just that. Also trust.

  5. 2 Timothy 1:7-8 • “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God.” • The “spirit of fear” originates in doubt, Matt. 8:26. • “Fear not” so often used in the N.T.

  6. 2 Timothy 1:7-8 • We should have confidence and peace – John 14:27. • To lose this dooms us – Rev. 21:8 • Do you think like a slave, a doubter, or a son of the Father. • “Therefore…”
