  7. The Little Old Lady • She is often wealthy. • Family is taken care of • Average donation in last five years: $118,000

  8. The Public Corporation • Follows company policy. • Lots of strings attached. • Donations disappear in economic downturns. • RBC Donated $250,000 for our capital campaign.

  9. Municipal Government • Hospital often is the largest employer in the community. • Great hospitals needed to attract businesses to community. • Increased funding for hospitals. • Donated $10 million to the hospital ‘s Capital Campaign.

  10. Private Corporations • The “Big Game” of hospital fundraising. • 90% of all donations made by this 10% of the population. • Donations are simple. • Usually biggest donations to hospital.

  11. The Physician • Poor source of donations. • Entitlement beliefs. • Poor Investors. • Need to use physicians in different ways to raise money.

  12. How Physicians Can Help • Financial Support. • Realize that you are the “Fiber of Connectivity.” • Physicians often just have to do their job well for donations to be made. • Physicians never have to solicit donations. Identification of donors is all that is required.

  14. How Physicians Can Help • Participate in “Gift Calls” when appropriate. • Individual donors. • Business groups, Politicians and Volunteers. • Success often involves matching the right physician with the right donor.

  15. How Physicians Can Help • Attend Fundraising and Recognition Events. • Celebrate new units and new equipment. • Go to galas. They are fun! • Participate in events such as “Mock Surgeries.”

  17. How Physicians Can Help • Be Ambassadors for the Hospital. • Support initiatives such as the Grateful Patient Program and Meet the Physicians Night.

  18. Grateful Patient Program • Posters in all waiting areas of the hospital. • Has raised over $130,000. • May spur even bigger gifts not captured in the brochures.

Philanthropy and Physicians • Health care is all about patient care. • We physicians can contribute much more to health care in the community beyond taking care of patients in our practices. • Philanthropy is the key to providing physicians with leading edge technology and state of the art hospital physical plant. • Please get involved to help your patients, your community and your self.
