  2. Nationalism: Strong Pride based on a person identifying with a specific nation or nation-state • State: An independent political entity (“Country”) • Nation: A group of people sharing a common culture or history • Nation-State: When the borders of a nation and a state are the same

  3. A force for both unity & division • Similar nations living under different govs can come together to form one state (Germany, Italy) • Culturally distinct nations can develop feelings of shared nationalism and come together as a Nation-state (U.S.A.) • Nations with little shared culture forced to live in one state can splinter to form independent nation-states (Yugoslavia, U.S.S.R.)
