  4. NIFT Mumbai…The threshold of fashion innovation and design. Positional strength Mumbai is emerging to be a fashion retail hub. Strong presence of the Corporate Sector. Brands be it national, private labels or designer brands is creating an ideal external environment for fashion. The fashion requirements of the film industry.

  5. The Institute 1986 - the turning point for the fashion industry in India. This was the year the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) was setup under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Today, NIFT with its seven centres across the nation, is acknowledged as the premier institute of fashion design, management and technology across the globe.

  6. The Institute NIFT has set academic standards and excelled in thought leadership by providing a pool of creative genius and technically competent professionals. The Institute provides a common platform for fashion education, research and training. NIFT Act 2006 published in the Gazette of India on 14th July 2006, confers Statutory Status on NIFT. The Act came into effect from 1st January 2007. The President of India is the ‘Visitor” of the Institute under the Act. The Act empowers the Institute to awarddegrees and other academic distinctions.

Academic Infrastructure • NIFT Mumbai has modern classrooms and labs which are equipped with the latest technology in garment construction machines, LCD projectors, the best quality dress-forms, internationally utilized pattern-making tables and vast spaces for students to think freely, innovate creativity and design the future. • The Fashion Communication department is well equipped with the latest in technology photo-lab. • Special Presentation Rooms with a capacity to accommodate 60 persons for conducting Seminars, Presentations, Discussions, Industry interactions, promotional activities etc. • Hostel facilities are provided to the girls entering First year Foundation Programme. About 70 students of Foundation programme reside in the hostel inside the campus and arrangement for about 30 students are made in rented flats outside campus. • 250 KVA KIRLOSKAR GENSET installed and commissioned. New EPBAX by MTNL installed in New Campus with a capacity of 100 lines (individual nos. under PRA line). • Local Area Network: Installation and commissioning of Local Area Network with 432 nodes is complete at NIFT Mumbai. Active components of the network are from CISCO and the passive components from D-Link. • Wi-Fi:NIFT Campus is equipped with wireless connectivity (Wi- Fi) .Within the campus 03 nos of access points are installed to cover the frequency at all open areas.

FASHION DESIGN The Fashion and Apparel curriculum offers specialization in Fashion Design which inculcates in students holistic inputs on generic design with more focused approach towards apparel inculcates the ability to develop creativity. The courrse is structured to keep them abreast with international garment trends and build their capacity to understand, articulate and execute a design brief. The programme prepares students to pursue careers as Designers, Freelance Design Consultants, Stylists, Exhibition and visual display Experts, Forecasting and Fashion Trends Forum Designers, Illustrators and Entrepreneurs.

  17. KNITWEAR DESIGN Knitwear design is emerging as a growth area in the new world order. The knitwear Design programme is structured keeping in view the future requirements of the Indian knitting industry. The students get an opportunity to work on state-of-the-art equipment like computerized flat bed knitting machines such as Shima Seiki and Stoll. They are also exposed to the techniques and variations in the circular and flat knitting. Manufacturing techniques, possible structure developments, processing and garmentingThe Knitwear Design Department is a specialized field where their curriculum is based on understanding textiles, Knitwear, designing, Global Issues of design research which are projects undertaken with Industry & Faculty mentors. The students of the graduating batch had displayed their presentation of the 22-weeks internship in various industries as their Graduation Project.

  18. FASHION COMMUNICATION Fashion Communication is one of the newest, most exciting avenues to open up in the fashion and lifestyle industry. With the multitude of domestic and international brands, companies and designers exploding in to the Indian retail scenario, it has become essential for each of them to develop a unique brand identity, and maximize its visibility. This is made possible by fashion communication professionals, who excel in extending the design strategy beyond the domain of the product, to include all aspects of communication design. The Fashion Communication programme encompasses areas such as visual merchandising., exhibition & display design, graphic design, fashion journalism, styling, photography, advertising and public relations, specific to the fashion and lifestyle industry. At the exit level therefore, equipped with an intensive skill, knowledge and concept base, Communication Design students emerge as dynamic professionals qualified to offer the most effective and financially viable communication solutions for the fashion and lifestyle industry.

  20. Department Of Fashion Technology The four year bachelor programme is designed to train students in the core garment manufacturing technology. With emphasis on best practices in Apparel Production coupled with understanding and application of Information Technology, the programme prepares professionals who are capable to significantly contribute to the fashion technology domain of the industry. The programme imparts practical knowledge pertaining to apparel manufacturing technology. The students learn about equipment and processes through hands-on training in laboratory, classroom sessions and industry exposure. The information technology input helps students to appreciate, evaluate and apply computer application and information technology in apparel production. Through the four years of intensive learning the students are prepared to play the role of change agents in the industry.

Department Of Fashion Technology • Hardware Utilized: • Pentium IV with 1 GB RAM • Lectra System - Pattern-Making & Grading • Plotter • Digitizer • Scanners • DVD Writer • Printers (Laser & Inkjet) Computer Aided Design - used for Advanced pattern making,marker planning for higher efficiency, grading, digitizing existing patterns and Plotting. The results achieved by CAD is flawless, and less time and labor consumption. Spec sheet, Detailing and Screen printing : Application software's like CorelDraw, Illustrator etc. are widely used for precise spec sheet Development and detailing of garments. These software's also enable texture and pattern fill process on the sheets

  22. Masters Programme Design Space The objective of ‘Design Space’ is to create a new avenue for professionals for higher education. The programme will have across discipline students who are able to work beyond boundaries and bring together their skills and ideas in new exciting ways in the fashion industry. This programme would encourage design thinking and would give a wider perspective and a broader perception to the thoughts and ideas of tomorrow. More opportunities will emerge for students to choose from a wide range of design specializations for research. So keeping in mind the requirements of tomorrow and forthcoming years where need for top level executives is more, a master programme is designed for the growing fashion space.

FASHION MANAGEMENT The objective of the two year Master Programme in Fashion Management * (erstwhile AMM) that started in 1987 is to develop managerial skills in the filed of fashion marketing, merchandising and retailing best suited to the requirements of the garment export and fashion retail sectors. Students undergo rigorous education in buying, merchandising (retail and export), retail operations, advertising, forecasting, international marketing, international trade practices and project formulation. They are exposed to creative merchandising/marketing, innovative fashion management practices, fashion forecasting and trends and business practices through filed visits and industry internships. The programme inculcates in the students the right attitude to be part of the middle management of any growing organization.

The Resource Center at NIFT Mumbai • The network of NIFT Mumbai Resource Center is one of the most modern Fashion Information Systems in India serving the fashion professionals and fashion educators in India. • NIFT Mumbai Resource center also provides information services to the design community, industry practitioners and entrepreneurs. • The NIFT Mumbai RC subscribes to leading international forecast publications, magazines, and textile journals. 11.

Student Exchange Programmes at NIFT Mumbai What is the student exchange program about ? • The exchange of information about academic contents through student exchange options. • The participation of students in courses at Fashion education institutions to upgrade the knowledge pool through Student Twinning (study abroad options). • The exchange of faculty to facilitate the up-gradation of knowledge pool and professional skills. • The exchange of information about academic contents through Faculty secondment to NIFT. • The participation of faculty and student pool in research planning. • Opportunity for U.G. students in semester 5 & P.G. students in semester 3 • Twinning / exchange in semester 6 & 7 starting January ’07 for U.G. • Twinning / exchange in semester 4 starting January ’07 for P.G. • Encouraging responses received from universities. • 32 students short listed from different centers for student exchange program for year 2006. Two Students from NIFT Mumbai were selected for different universities: • Mr. Arpit Raizada, Fashion Communication Sem VI went to Instituto Superior de design, Naples, Italy under Graphics and Visual Communication in Jan – June 2007 • Ms. Aditi Mittal AMIT Sem VII has gone to De Mont Ford University, UK under B.Sc. Fashion Technology in June – December 2007

Continuing Education (CE) Programme offered at NIFT, Kharghar Navi Mumbai and City Center, New Marine Lines, Mumbai National Institute of fashion technology, offers short duration part time courses under Continuing Education (CE).
