  1. Objective 1.01- Identify the major domestic issues and conflicts experienced by the nation during the Federalist Period. Welcome Back Get to Work!

Major Concepts • Establishment of federal power and supremacy over the states. - Federal vs. State (Who wins?) *Article 6 • Development of the first two-party system. - Federalists vs. Democratic-Republicans - Federal vs. State • Strict and Loose Interpretation of Constitution. - How should the Constitution be read? - “word for word” vs. “in between the lines”

  3. Terms • Judiciary Act of 1789: set up Supreme Court and # of justices, 3 federal circuit courts, and 13 federal district courts. • Bill of Rights: 1st 10 amendments in Constitution. Federalists included in Const. to get the Democratic-Republicans to sign. • Hamilton’s Economic Plan: favored the fed. gov., more commerce/industry, a National Bank, loose interpretation, fed. Gov. assume all state debts, and capital in DC.

  4. Terms….cont’d. • Whiskey Rebellion: excise tax levied on whiskey. Angered frontier farmers b/c easier to carry whiskey than corn across Appalachian Mtns. • Democratic-Republican Party: political party, led by Jefferson, that favored strong state governments. • Federalist Party: political party, led by Hamilton, that favored a strong federal government.

  5. Terms…..cont’d. • Election of 1800: Thomas Jefferson (D-R) vs. John Adams (F). Jefferson won. • “Midnight Judges”: Adams packed Supreme Court w/ Federalist judges on his last day after he increased # of judges by 16 w/ Judiciary Act of 1801. • Laissez-faire: “allow to do”. Gov. leaves economy alone.

  6. Terms…..cont’d. • Marbury vs. Madison: Madison tried to block Marbury’s papers ( a “Midnight Judge”). Marbury won. Judicial review established. • John Marshall: a Federalist, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who decided Marbury vs. Madison. • Louisiana Purchase: bought from Napoleon for $15 million. More than doubled the size of the U.S.

  7. Terms…..cont’d • Alien and Sedition Acts: citizen after 14 yrs. (not 5), President can deport/jail any alien, and fines/jail for anyone hindering the gov. • Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions: appeals to the states by Jefferson and Madison opposing the Alien and Sedition Acts b/c it was used unfairly vs. Dem.-Repubs. • Hartford Convention (1814): event during the War of 1812. New England almost seceded b/c opposed the war. Federalist Party ended after the war. (No records kept.)
