  1. Hadron Physics with Antiprotons –the PANDA Program Olaf N. Hartmann GSI Darmstadt, Germany INPC 2004 · Göteborg, Sweden

  2. Antiproton Annihilation at Darmstadt • Charmonium • Gluonic excitations and exotics • Charmed hadrons in matter • Hypernuclei • Electromagnetic processes • Open charm physics • → multipurpose detector PANDA

  3. Studying the Strong Interaction • Non-perturbative regime of QCD • Quarks are confined • Hadron mass >> Σ quark masses • Self-interaction among gluons

  4. HESR Super FRS CR production target NESR Integration of PANDA in FAIR • FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) • proton Linac • 100/300 Tm Synchrotron • HESR (High Energy Storage Ring) • 50 Tm storage ring 1 to 15 GeV/c antiprotons • high luminosity mode: L= 2·1032 cm-2s-1 • high resolution mode: p/p ~ 10-5 • electron cooling/stochastic cooling • internal target

  5. Crystall Ball Charmonium Spectroscopy • advantage in :direct formation of allcharmonium states • On PANDAs menu: • Systematic study of the complete spectrum (high statistics, high precision) • hc • Radiative deexcitations • States above the DDbar-threshold

  6. Glueballs Mixing with other states maybe less in charm quark mass region Clean signal: exotic quantum numbers Morningstar, Peardon, PRD 60(99)034509 UKQCD, Bali et al., PLB 309(93)378

  7. (Charmed) Hybrids • Mixed state of a quark-antiquark pair and a gluon • Non-exotic hybrids:formation, production • Exotic hybrids:production(JPC = 0+-, 1-+, 2+-) Exotic charmonia: 3-5 GeV/c2

  8. Charmed Hadrons in Medium • Evidences for modificationsin medium (charged kaons, pions) • D-meson: heavy quark, light antiquark50-160 MeV/c2 splitting • Large charm quark mass↔ little sensitivity to quark condensate→ gluon condensatem = 140 MeV/c2 for Ψ(3770)

  9. Hypernuclei

  10. Muon detectors • Internal target • Pellets • Cluster jet • Wire • Forward Spectrometer • Drift chambers • Electromagnetic Calorimeter • Hadron Calorimeter • Muon detectors Microvertex- detector (silicon pixel) • Tracking detector • straw tubes • TPC Electromagnetic Calorimeter Tracking detectors Mini drift chambers Particle ID DIRC Particle ID RICH PANDA detector Target spectrometer 2 T (solenoid) Forward spectrometer 2 Tm (dipole)

  11. Summary • PANDA Physics Program: Charmonium, Glueballs, Hybrids, Charmed Hadrons in Matter, HypernucleiElectromagnetic Processes,Open Charm Physics • PANDA Detector: high resolution for charged and neutral particles in nearly 4π
