  1. EVITA

  2. Made in 1996 • Directed by Alan Parker • Also directed Life of David Gale and The Commitments • Play written by Tim Rice, Screenplay by Alan Parker • Madonna starred as Eva Peron • Also starred in Die Another Day • Antonio Banderas starred as Che • Also starred in Spy Kids and Desperado • Jonathan Pryce starred as Juan Peron • Also starred in Pirates of the Carribbean

  3. Madonna wrote a lengthy letter to convince the director to cast her • Madonna changed costumes 85 times, more than Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra • Oliver Stone wrote a draft of the screenplay, he had originally planned to direct it but the president of Argentina wouldn’t allow him. • Alan Parker makes a cameo as the frustrated director • In the play there is a line, “the new world Madonna with the golden touch.” This was changed to, “she’s Our Lady of the new world with the golden touch.” for the film.

  4. Madonna was pregnant for a portion of the film. • Michelle Pheiffer, Meryl Streep, Pia Zadora, Charo, and Maria Conchita Alonso were considered for the lead role. • Pheiffer had actually taken voice lessons when the film was to be directed by Oliver Stone. • Ken Russell was the first director attached and his first choice for Eva was Barbara Streisand • The Blue Harley Davidson WLA used in the funeral scene was restored on British TV before filming began as a publicity stunt. • Most of the costumes were based on pictures of the real Eva Peron.

  5. The project was being developed way back in 1979 and Olivia Newton-John was rallying for the role then. • Patti LuPone who played Evita on Broadway was offered the role of Evita’s mother but turned it down. • LuPone was never seen during the shooting even though Madonna wanted to know what she thought. • Madonna only speaks 140 words of actual dialogue • Antonio Banderas only speaks 6 words of dailogue

  6. This is a Rock Musical not an opera, the difference is the style of music and the minor dialogue elements. • This won the Oscar for original song “You Must Love Me” • This won the Golden Globe for Comedy/Musical, Original Song, and Actress in a Musical for Madonna.
