  1. CONFINED SPACE AWARENESS OSHA requires employers to develop and implement procedures that will protect employees from the hazards of working in confined spaces. The OSHA Permit-Required Confined Space Standard (29 CFR 1910.146) requires identification and development of entry procedures for regulated confined spaces. For employers who do not allow their employees to enter confined spaces, the standard requires that access to regulated confined spaces be controlled. 2. Training All ENVIRON employees will be trained to recognize both confined spaces and permit-required confined spaces. All employees will be made aware of ENVIRON’s policy prohibiting entry into permit-required confined spaces. MANHOLE CONFINED SPACES / E N V I R O N H & S T R A I N I N G P R O G R A M

  3. What is a Confined Space? A Confined space is an area that: Has adequate size and configuration for employee entryHas limited means of entry and exitIs not designed for continuous employee occupancy STORAGE TANK CONFINED SPACES / E N V I R O N H & S T R A I N I N G P R O G R A M

  4. What is a Permit-Required Confined Space? • A permit-required confined space fits the basic definition of a confined space and presents one or more of the following hazards: • Contains or has potential to contain a hazardous condition. • Contains material that could engulf an entrant. • Is configured so that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls. • Contains any other recognized health hazard. 5. Employee Responsibilities • Do not enter a permit-required confined space. • Obtaininformation on confined spaces from Project Manager and/or host facility prior to visiting a site. • Workwith Project Manager to ensure that site-specific HASPs address confined space issues (if a confined space exists at the site). 6. Project Manager Responsibilities • Requestand review an inventory of confined spaces and permit required confined spaces from the host facility. • Inform ENVIRON staff and/or contractors /subcontractors of confined space issues as appropriate. • Identify the means by which the host facility informs employees of the presence of permit required confined spaces (I.e. signs, labels). 7. Determine if Entry is Necessary • Project Managers should ask the following questions: • Is the space a permit-required confined space? • Are there alternative methods for conducting the work? • Are ENVIRON employees (based in Northbrook and approved to enter permit required confined spaces) available to assist? • Can trained subcontractors perform the work? 8. Host Company’s Responsibilities • Identify all permit-required confined spaces. • Prevent unauthorized entry. • Review confined space information with ENVIRON employees. • Post DANGER signs at entrances to permit-required confined spaces. 9. Notification • OSHA requires standard signs for all permit required confined spaces to read as follows: Danger Permit-Required Confined Space Do Not Enter CONFINED SPACES / E N V I R O N H & S T R A I N I N G P R O G R A M

  10. Summary • Because Facility personnel are not permitted to enter permit required confined spaces, this training has been designed to explain what constitutes a confined space and to inform employees of what they should do should they encounter one at a site.
