  1. Knight Rider:For Beginners Jian Li ORF/PSY 322 Final Project May 10, 2004

  2. Inspiration • 1980’s television hit series starring “Kitt.” • Current developments in Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS), such as smart cruise control, navigational systems, and automated steering. • Current research on automated highway driving capabilities through neural networks (Kornhauser et al).

  3. Stress and Trust Factors • Stress from IVHS components arise from prolonged driver attention and processing overload (Matthews et al.). • In a survey conducted on Princeton University undergraduates, more than 95% of students trust the reliability of computers, but not IVHS systems. • There is evidence of a trust factor.

  4. Driver Training with IVHS • Mind and Body Duality: Learning a skill requires interactions between the two realms. • Stress originating from the presence of an another driver: the expectation factor (Cooper and Weaver). • In a survey on Princeton students, more than 65% experience stress when driving with another person.

  5. Collision Factor vs. Displacement Centerline Collision Factor 20deg 10deg 5deg Displacement (ft) Collision Module: “Alain” • A Bayesian Probability model for determining collision factor. • Alain coupled with a imagining system can determine deflection and displacement. • A simplified simulation using Matlab produced reasonable results.

  6. Conclusions • IVHS components need to be designed for ease of use and reliability. • Using an automated driver trainer program reduces stress creates by the presence of a second driver. • Using a Bayesian probability model to create a collision module seems feasible. • As automobiles become more intelligent and automated, people need to learn both motor skills as well as data processing skills.
