  1. Places Not To Be Missed In Massachusetts Massachusetts is a populous and famous state in the New England region of the north-eastern United States. This state is named after the Massachusetts tribe, which once inhabited the region. Its capital is Boston. Massachusetts is the 7th among the smallest states with extensive coastline. Interesting facts about Massachusetts:  Massachusetts is home to 121 institutions of higher education.  Massachusetts was an early center of the Transcendentalist movement, which emphasized intuition, emotion, human individuality and a deeper connection with nature.  Massachusetts is also an important center for the performing arts.  It is home to a large number of museums and historical sites.  Long-distance hiking trails in Massachusetts include the Appalachian Trail, the New England National Scenic Trail, etc.  In the late 19th century, the Olympic sports of basketball and volleyball were invented in the Western Massachusetts cities of Springfield. Most people also visit Salem, Plymouth, and the Berkshires that are the most popular tourist attractions. Salem Salem is a vibrant coastal city in Essex County, Massachusetts.
