  9. Ice Breaker BINGO

  10. Problem A • Jack has a major crush on Jil. During study hall he finally decides to write her a note and ask her out. The note passes through 5 people before Mrs. Jones grabs it. Mrs. Jones wants to know who was involved in passing the note. • Your task: Use the clues to determine: • the order of people the note passed through • The color each person was wearing • The subject each person was studying

  11. Clue 1: The girl studying English passed it to Paul who then passed it to the girl in green • Clue 2: Tiffany passed it to the boy in Blue who gave it to Alexis who was reading • Clue 3: The girl in black gave it to Jil • Clue 4: Jack first gave it to Mary who was studying English • Clue 5: The girl in black who was reading got the note from derrick • Clue 6: Paul was wearing yellow and studying Italian • Clue 7: Derrick was studying French • Clue 8: The girl in green was studying science • Clue 9: The girl in pink passed it to the boy studying Italian

  12. Wednesday 9/7/16 • AIM: How do we know we are alive? • DO NOW: HOMEWORK: Practice regents questions 1-5

  13. Are you alive? Are you sure? How do you know? List ALL the characteristics that living things display.

  14. Discuss with the person next to you the characteristics you listed. Are they the same? Are they different? Do you agree with them?

  15. Observe the pictures below. Characterize each one as living or non living and explain why

  16. List 5 things other than animals that are living

  17. What is biology? Bio- life Logy- the study of This includes both the visible world of plants and animals as well as invisible world of bacteria and algae

  18. What are some other scientific studies? • Chemistry • Physics • Anatomy and Physiology • Embryology

  19. Thursday 9/8/16 • AIM: How can we determine if something is living? • DO NOW: If you were sent to a foreign planet and you came across two “things” How would you tell if they were living? • HOMEWORK: Regents packet questions 6-10 • QUIZ TUESDAY Characteristics of Life

  20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juxLuo-sH6M

  21. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM_CgOgJGG0

  22. How would you define Life?

  23. Friday 9/9/16 • AIM: What are the characteristics of life? • DO NOW: What characteristics describe living things? Write them at the top of each column column under the heading • Homework: get your binder or 5 subject notebook, pens and pencils by Monday

  24. Answer: Life is defined according to specific characteristics The characteristics vary slightly but there are nine characteristics always solid Cellular Movement Require energy Metabolism Growth and development Reproduction Responsiveness Heredity Adaptation and evolution

  25. Monday 9/12/16 • AIM: How do we identify things as living? • DO NOW: 1-Explain the difference between a living and nonliving thing. • 2- Take out your characteristics of life handout from Friday • HOMEWORK: STUDY FOR QUIZ

  26. http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.colt.alive/is-it-alive/http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.colt.alive/is-it-alive/

  27. Answer: Life is defined according to specific characteristics The characteristics vary slightly but there are nine characteristics always solid Cellular Movement Require energy Metabolism Growth and development Reproduction Responsiveness Heredity Adaptation and evolution

  28. The cell: the basic unit of life Some organisms are single celled like bacteria or multi billion celled like us Below is a single celled ameba

  29. All Living things are made up of cells • Smallest unit capable of life functions • UNICELLULAR ORGANISMS • Entire organisms is only 1 single cell • Bacteria and Protista

  30. Multicellular organisms • Entire organism is made up of many cells

  31. Human Cells

  32. Organization of multicellular animals

  33. Levels of organization • Cell: basic unit of life • Tissue • Organ • Organ System • Organism • Population • Community • Ecosystem • Biosphere

  34. What is movement • a change in position. • a whole organism can move. • internal organs, fluid, blood can move. • cell parts and cells can move.

  35. How do you get your energy?

  36. Require energy • All living things need energy for basic life processes • Living things get energy from the food they ingest • Some living things can make their own food • Ex: plants

  37. Require energy Above is the molecular model of ATP the energy producing molecule.

  38. Metabolism: • all the chemical process performed by a living organism • Digestion • Circulation • Synthesis • Ingestion • Diffusion • Absorption, elimination • All metabolic processes need ATP • All metabolic process help maintain homeostasis

  39. Growth and development Grow in size as well as rebuild and repair

  40. Development: change in form

  41. Development: differentiation

  42. Group share groups of 3 In groups, without your notes list ALL of the characteristics of life

  43. Tuesday 9/13/16 • AIM: How do scientists define something as living? • DO NOW: What was the last meal you ate? How did you get energy from that meal? • Homework: Regents packet questions 11-14

  44. Reproduction - production of a new offspring or organism. 2 types: 1) sexual – 2 parents 2) asexual – 1 parent ** NOT needed for the individual organism to survive – just the species.

  45. Human Reproduction

  46. Think about the last time you accidentally stubbed your toe. Almost instantly, you flinched back in pain.
