REMINDER: What is the PURPOSE of THINK.RESPECT time? • PURPOSES: • Improve our school through increasing communication between the students and staff • HELP students IMPROVE their grades and overall student achievement • Engage students on reflecting on their goals and efforts • Allow time for students to request assistance if they need it • Increase pride in our school by thanking those that help us.

  4. SPARTAN BUCKS • You want them…we got them. Every month we will target a behavior that we would like to see in our students. • It is up to each individual teacher… • You will be creating something today. If you share with your teacher, then they MAY give you a Spartan Buck.

  5. YOUR SMART GOALS • In the last session you wrote down ACADEMIC SMART goals. • Teachers, please pass back SMART goals and blank copies to new students. (New students please read directions and begin completing) • Also, pass out the ACADEMIC Reflection sheet

  6. We want to know what you think…5-6 minutes individual reflection time Please answer the following question on your Academic Reflection sheet Please answer the follow questions. Looking at your SMART Goal sheet… 1. Have your done the things you said you were going to do since the day you wrote your SMART goal? 2. Explain WHY or WHY NOT. 3. What still needs to be done to meet this goal? • 1. What do you like most about school? (Besides talking with friends) • 2. What area do you feel Fitzgerald needs more support or could improve? (Besides the cafeteria food) • Explain why.

  7. DISCUSSION • Please discuss student responses that would like to share on previous questions.

  8. “GAME TIME” • Stand up next to your chair/desk • Hold out one of your hands (flatly with fingers together) • Take a pen/pencil and place it on top of your flat hand. • Now without using your other hand TRY to catch the pen or pencil (one handed). • Can you do 1 or more pens/pencils? 2? 3? • Take turns with someone else if you don’t have a pen/pencil • How many times can you do it in a minute?

PERSISTENCE • Persistence: the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people • So, if you didn’t succeed the first time at catching the pencil…did you try again and again. THAT is PERSISTANCE…NOT GIVING UP! • So, if you didn’t reach your SMART GOAL…PERSIST…Don’t GIVE UP! • OR Challenge yourself even more!!!

FINAL EXAMS are coming up! • It is time to STUDY!!! • Today, we’re going to give you some study tips. • By completing this activity (taking notes) and creating an ACRONYM for one of your classes you will be eligible to receive a Spartan Buck from your teachers that choose to participate. • You will need to show the activity to them with an acronym that can work for that class.

  14. 8 Memory Principles: Key Words • Personal Interest, ego, me • Confidence, attitude • Knowledge, background • Importance, select • Organize, bundles • Aloud • Visualize, picture, draw • Time, cram

  15. Memory Principles(Students Please take notes on handout) • 1. Interest: • (Explanation) Memory is related to interest… find a reason that will make the information important to you • How can you connect to the text or information?

  16. Memory Principles (Students Please take notes on handout) • 2. Confidence: • (Explanation) A positive attitude about the strength of your memory is key • You must be confident that you will remember!

  17. Memory Principles (Students Please take notes on handout) • 3. Knowledge • How much new material you will understand and remember depends on how much you already know about the subject • The more you increase your basic knowledge, the easier it is to build new knowledge

Organizing: • Material/items will be grouped or categorized according to the topics that you feel you can best remember them by • Helps promote memorization of certain items or information • Links your previous knowledge of items with future learning

  20. Memory Principles (Students Please take notes on handout) • 6. Aloud: • Say ideas aloud in your own words • This is the best way to move information from your short-term memory to your long-term memory.

  21. Memory Principles (Students Please take notes on handout) • 7. Visualize: • Draw a picture in your mind and on paper of what you want to remember. • Key words will help you decide what to draw.

Time: • The brain needs time to hold on to new information. • It’s better to learn small bits over a long period of time than to try to cram in lots of information on the night before a test. • You will remember more if you study for 20 – 25 minutes, take a short break and then study again than if you cram for two hours straight.

  23. 3. Key Phrases (Students Please take notes on handout) • What are key phrases? • Why are they important? • How will it aid in your reading of different texts?

Mnemonic Devices/ Acronyms#6 and #7 on your sheet. • What does MNEMONIC mean? helps you to remember • What is an acronym? letters that stand for words • Examples: Look at the acronyms in your packet and try to figure out what they mean. • You may do this with someone already sitting next to you.

Catch Phrase#8 and #9 (on your sheet) Come up with an acronym for one of your classes. • groups of words that help us remember some kind of important information • Usually each of the words at the beginning of the phrase stand for something. Example: English Teachers at FHS • Crawford, Koss, Davis, Demick, Fletcher, Hrycaj, Walker, Schoenherr • Could Ken Dunk Double-Frosted, Honey Waffles Sunday?

  27. What is SQ3R? • SQ3R is a previewing device that will help you gather information about a text. • SQ3R is an example of an acronym . • How will using this method help aid our comprehension of specific text?

  28. Activity #2Breaking it Down…(Please take notes on your sheet) • S= Survey • Q= Question • R= Read • R= Recite/Recall • R= Review

  29. Survey • Look at the title, subheadings, pictures, graphs, etc… • Where are they located? • What purpose do they serve?

  30. Questioning • Change the subheadings using questioning words. • Who • What • When • Where • Why • How

  31. Reading • Read the sections in order to answer the questions you just wrote

  32. Recite • Quiz yourself. Answer the questions that you just wrote.

  33. Review • Go over the answers and the material that you just covered. • Repeat every day.

  34. SQ3R Activity • Use material that you have with you right now, like a textbook. • Complete the worksheet - SQ3R Study Method Worksheet - using that textbook to practice the strategy.

  35. THINK.RESPECT Time • Please take a few minutes to fill out the requests ONLY if needed and return to the teacher: • Counselor assistance (Blue Form) • Academic assistance/Tutoring (Green Form) • THINK.RESPECT Postcards… Fill out a postcard thanking your favorite MATH/SCIENCE teacher OR write one out to a friend that has helped you recently. You have 24 hours to hand deliver.
