  1. PMG AgendaSeptember 7, 2000 • Overview (Weerts) • Detector status • Reportable milestones • Summary • Silicon (Demarteau) • Muon ( Denisov)

  2. Status Overview: SMT • Silicon (more details Marcel) • Production of components: completion close • Micron sensors are all in hand, except 900 • HDI’s nearly all stuffed (need ~25 Promex, 20 Silitronix) • Ladder production complete by end of Septemebr • Low mass cable for barrels/F disks done: 829 at vendor • Ablation, surface mount, add coax going well • Out of 563 tested 548 pass • Need 220 for H disks • 10% readout test • Have successfully read out 18 HDI’s on F disk • Real Barrel now hooked up, ready to go • Trigger dates for fall back positions • Miss the September 1: SMTS complete (more on next slides)

  3. Status Overview : SMT Silicon Action triggers Missed the September 1 “SMTS complete”trigger - not for ladder production reasons - mechanical infrastructure, etc Projection for arrival of completed of SMTS at DAB: Nov 1, 2000 (details next slide)

  4. Status Overview: SMT-S Approach: declare Nov 1 as a major deadline How do we accomplish that ? • Have detailed task list • Monitor progress on daily basis • Make decisions on daily basis to stay on schedule • Rearrange priorities in silicon, so SMTS completion is highest priority • Go to multiple shifts • Already added technical manpower If necessary…….. • Reduce testing time at SiDet • Others issues as we go along Can we do it earlier than November 1, 2000 ? From task list ( day by day) it is tight Descoping not useful at this point and given nature of problem

  5. Overview: Fiber tracker status • Waveguide Production and QC continue • Production essential complete except for remakes • About 30-40 are expected to fail QC

  6. Overview: Fiber tracker status • VLPC Cassettes • Continues • Some problems with “leakers” • 2 characterized cassettes required chip replacement

  7. Overview: Fiber tracker status • So far two runs done • 2 Million triggers under normal conditions • 35% RH and 72 F • 1.7 Million triggers dry • 1% RH and 72 F • Data analysis underway • Preliminary tracking working • We are continuing to flow N2 • 3 weeks required (at least) to reach stable point • Will take another run if cassette testing allows

  8. Status Overview • Central Muons • Commissioning continues • Forward Muon detectors • Production in Lab F done. • Denisov will give details. • Trigger & DAQ • Progressing, no major schedule concerns • Starting to push on rate capabilities • L3 hardware (VRC) replaces present software emulation by Oct • Online • In use at low rate, not on critical path • Decision on logging machine made (Compaq)

  9. Status Overview; Electronics • Electronics • Calorimeter • 5000 preamps installed on detector (of 55k) • 250 production BLS boards on Sept 15 • 1000 BLS daughter cards in assembly • Muon • PDT electronics - done • Scintillator • Front end • SFE: have 139 out of 145 • SLP: have 5 out of 25 ( stuffed here) • Readout card - done • MDT - done • Readout electronics • Readout 100% • Fanout, MFC: have 8 out of 28 Enough of all for muon commissioning

  10. Status Overview; Electronics • Tracking Electronics • Si Interface Card • 2 production boards stuffed and being tested • Skip preproduction and start final production ( 160 at 3/day), some risk • Cabling/infrastructure work underway • Analog Front End boards • Delays due to illness of engineer • Production versions in hand; firmware ( have 6 stuffed) • Approve by Sept 20; complete January 17 • MCM going • Good yield first 50 • Need 1900, ordered 2200; have 2350 SVX chips • Adapter card • Sept 1: 34 pre-production cards • Power supplies • VICOR has long delivery times and increasing

  11. Installation • A layer muon pixels north • Being installed today • Assembly took 6 days instead of 8 weeks for south ( use it for scaling SMTS to SMTN ??) • VLPC cassette are being read out; new effort to prepare for waveguide testing • Waveguide installation: a problem developed. • Next slide for details • Big effort by Mike McKenna ( redo years of work in one week) • Focus & attention on silicon infrastructure; a lot of effort • Cooling and air • Cabling • Complete by October 15; functional Nov 1

  12. Waveguide Routing Not quite • We have run into a problem with WG routing • Original scheme presents too large a build-up in a few regions. • EC cannot close • Currently measuring CC/EC clearance at large r • Making 1/4 scale model

  13. Summary • Concerns • Silicon concerns continue….. But area of concern has shifted to “installation” of barrels and disks. • We have used up contingency for SMTS • It is not Micron anymore….. • Electronics delays are an increasing concern for realistic commissioning Successes: many but always over shadowed by problems. We are making progress, especially in the assembly hall, where infrastructure is getting into place.
