  2. What stage are you at with social media?

  3. What we will be seeing in this presentation What is a wiki? How to Wiki? Where to find wikis How do you get started Next steps • Why use wikis? • View some wikis in action All about Blogs

  4. Wiki – what does it mean? Quick!

  5. What is a wiki? • A wiki is an interactive website • That means it is a website with an edit button. • Clicking on Edit transforms the browser into an editor and you, the reader, into a co-author. http://askauntieweb.blogspot.com/2009/04/wikis.html

  6. Why Use Wikis? • Wikis are free depending on what you want to use them for – ie there are free versions and paid versions • Wikis are very easy to create and change, you don't have to know any html. You notice a typo? Just click on Edit, correct it, and save your changes. Some information is missing? Just click on Edit and add it. (Just like editing in a Word document) • Wikis are designed to be edited by groups of people rather than just one individual. Wikis are perfect for collaborative projects because they allow a group of people to work together on the same document. http://askauntieweb.blogspot.com/2009/04/wikis.html

  7. Why use wikis Cont’d • Wikis are stored and edited on the Internet so you can access them from anywhere. • Oops! Make a mistake? The history of changes to a wiki is stored alongside the wiki itself, so you can easily revert to a previous version if you or anyone else deletes anything by mistake. • A discussion area is attached to every wiki page where you can ask questions and make suggestions about the topic on that page. You can also, easily opt to have only one discussion area for the whole wiki if you wish. • Wikis are good places for collecting and structuring information. A wiki is a linked group of pages that can include text, pictures and even audio or video clips, in fact any type of multimedia http://askauntieweb.blogspot.com/2009/04/wikis.html

  8. Wiki Uses • Coonara Community house uses wikis as standard for every accredited class for: • Uploading resources for students to download at home • Uploading assessments, timetables, unit outlines etc • Using the discussion board for assessments, employability skills etc • Action learning collaborative projects – students work together • Personal wikis for reflection and uploading of assessments • Sending messages to one, two or all of the group at once • http://cert3chntuespm.coonarahouse.org.au • http://cert3chnfrid.coonarahouse.org.au • http://dipchnservices.coonarahouse.org.au • http://dipcomdev.coonarahouse.org.au

  9. Wikis in Action! “Hey, I am into my 4th week of doing placement work and I am truly enjoying the challenge... in fact it is such an eye-opener and I cannot believe the satisfaction being realised through the whole process. The opportunities to experience the learning happening both in the children and in me is taking me to new levels of enjoyment and empowerment. I have enjoyed all aspects of observing in my own environment and implementing activities and experiences for the children and linking them into the outcomes in the framework – it is such an enlightening result. It is almost too easy - but having the right tools and instructions is paramount to the result. The learning stories are happening right in front of my eyes all the time - I guess they have always been there but we have not been tuned in to the right wavelength”. Diploma of Children’s Services student August, 2011 reflecting in her personal wiki
