  1. Seminar:Final Project “Science meets Real Life”Life outside of Earth Freddie Arocho-Perez Kaplan University SC300: Big Ideas in Science

  2. Final Project Rationale • Whether you think of yourself as an up and coming scientist or not, you use Science every day. • You will explore how you apply different aspects of Science in your daily life.

  3. General Instructions • Use the information from the Unit 9 Project link. • A sample submission format is located in DocSharing. • This assignment is divided in 2 parts: • Part 1: Scientific Method • Part 2: Why I cannot live with/without Science? • Your assignment should be written in 1,000 – 1,500 words.

  4. Part 1: Scientific Method • You will apply the steps of the Scientific Method to 2 situations that could occur in your everyday life. • You will use the Scientific Method to solve the problem at hand.

  5. Part 1: Scientific Method

  6. Part 1: Scientific Method • Scenario 1: • You arrive home late at night. You walk up to the front door, unlock it, and reach in to turn on the light switch located just inside the front door. The light does not come on! Now what?

  7. Part 1: Scientific Method • Scenario 2: • Develop your own detailed problem/observation and apply the scientific method to solve. • Come up with a second detailed scenario on your own and follow the same steps in the scientific method to find a resolution. • Ideas/Suggestions: • Computer Problems • Fax/Telephone Problems • Problems at Work

  8. Part 2: Why I cannot live with/without Science • As you have seen throughout this course, Science is intricately interwoven with our lives: • in the food we eat • in the clothes we wear • in the computers we use for this course • In this part, you will answer a series of questions.

  9. Part 2: Why I cannot live with/without Science • 1) Describe a typical day in your life from the time you wake up, until the time you go to bed. Describe how Science impacts you and your routine throughout the day. • 2) How has Science improved your quality of life and why?

  10. Part 2: Why I cannot live with/without Science • 3) Are there any negative impacts that Science has had? What are they and why? • 4) Do you believe that you could survive without Science? Why or why not? • 5) How has this course impacted the way you view Science?

  11. Life outside of Earth

  12. Life outside of Earth • Our senses make us very sensitive machines for noticing patterns. • Yet, there is so much in the universe beyond our senses. • We have pushed the limits of our observational powers to visualize other planets and galaxies that are millions of miles away. • But in all of that searching, we have never found the one thing that many people have wanted to find for centuries: LIFE.

  13. Life outside of Earth Ancient Cave Art 6,000 B.C. Tassili Sahara Desert, North Africa (Ancient Astronaut and UFOs) Ancient Cave Art 5,000 B.C. Kimberley, Australia (Ancient Astronaut)

  14. Life outside of Earth Ancient Cave Art 5,000 B.C. Kimberley, Australia (Strange Beings) Possible UFO in Ancient French Cave 17,000 B.C. (Lascaux Cave)

  15. Life outside of Earth The Pyramids of Gizeh and the Sphinx

  16. Nazca Lines, Peru One theory of the purpose of the lines is that the Nazca people's motivations were religious and that the images were constructed so that gods in the sky could see them (200 B.C.).

  17. Stonehenge, United Kingdom Geologists believe that the stones of originated in the Preseli Hills of Wales (about 137 miles away from the site of the Stonehenge). Given the huge size of the stones, moving them over 100 miles would be a herculean task. Many doubt if people living 5000 years ago either had the technology or if they were able to garner the brute muscle power required to transport the stones from the Welsh mountain range to Salisbury Valley, in England. This led to the origin of the theory: “Role of the Aliens”.

  18. Crop Circles Crop circle formation is similar to alleged UFO landing site reports where a circular swirling pattern is formed in grass, the grass remains unharmed, and is in inaccessible locations for vehicles.

  19. Life outside of Earth • Francis Crick (1916-2004), one of the co-discoverers of DNA, subscribed to the theory of intelligent design, that our universe was not simply the result of a series of chemical accidents. • He stated: “Life did not evolve first on Earth, a highly advanced civilization became threatened so they devised a way to pass on their existence”.

  20. SETI • Since the mid-1950s, American scientists have been searching actively for extraterrestrial life with all of the most advanced astronomical tools. • For a long time, the US government funded this research, called the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI, for short).

  21. Roswell UFO Crash • On July 2, 1947, an object crash landed on a ranch, approximately 75 miles northwest of Roswell, leaving a large field of debris. • The local air base at Roswell investigated after the rancher first reported it to Roswell authorities on July 6. • On July 8, the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) announced it had recovered a “flying disk”. • A few hours after the initial “flying disk” press release, U.S. Army Air Force officials stated that it was not a UFO, but a weather balloon.

  22. SETI: Carl Sagan • Sagan is best known for his research on the possibilities of extraterrestrial life, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. • He urged the scientific community to listen with radio telescopes for signals from intelligent extraterrestrial life-forms. • Sagan also helped Dr. Frank Drake write the Arecibo message, a radio message beamed into space from the Arecibo Radio Telescope on November 16, 1974, aimed at informing extraterrestrials about Earth. “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”

  23. SETI • Most SETI projects involve surveying the sky with massive radio and optical telescopes that are designed to listen and watch for signals that are made up of non-random patterns. • The assumption scientists use is that, if there is life beyond this planet, we may be able to find evidence of it by looking for unusual patterns coming from space.

  26. Arecibo Radio TelescopeArecibo, Puerto Rico The 1000 ft. (305 m) diameter Arecibo Radio Telescope is the largest single-dish telescope in the world.

  27. Voyager • The Voyager spacecraft, launched in 1977 to travel to and explore Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, have made many intriguing discoveries, including a possible ocean of liquid water on one of Jupiter’s moons. • The Voyager carries the “Golden Record”.

  28. Voyager • The Voyager message is carried by a phonograph record-a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. • The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University. • There are 115 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind and thunder, birds, whales, and other animals. • Musical selections from different cultures and eras were added, and spoken greetings from Earth-people in 55 languages, and printed messages from President Carter.

  29. Allan Hills 84001 • ALH 84001 is a meteorite. It was found in December 1984 in Antarctica by a U.S. meteorite-hunting expedition. • On August 6, 1996, ALH 84001 became newsworthy when it was announced that the meteorite may contain evidence for traces of life from Mars.

  30. “Face on Mars” • The occurrence of an object on Mars with a seemingly human face caught the attention of individuals and organizations interested in extraterrestrial intelligence and visitations to Earth, and the images were published in this context in 1977.

  31. “UFO” Military Technology?

  32. RendleshamForest • The Rendlesham Forest case is undoubtedly one of the best documented and most significant military encounters with a UFO. • It is also very credible incident. The incident spanned 4 days in 1980. • Rendlesham Forest is a large pine forest, east of Ipswich, in Suffolk, England. • Nearby are the twin NATO air bases, RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge; at the time both bases were being leased to the United States Air Force. • Several UFO incidents, including multiple-witness sightings by military personnel, ground traces, and radioactive anomalies were reported from Rendlesham forest. • According to security patrolmen on duty, “the object was described as being metallic in appearance and triangular in shape, approx. 2-3 meters across the base... it illuminated the entire forest with a white light, and had a pulsing red light on top and a bank of blue lights underneath”. • In November, 2002, the British Ministry of Defense released the “Rendlesham File” confirming the incident.

  33. Frederick ValentichUFO Disappearance • 20-year old Australian pilot who disappeared with his plane on a Saturday night after radioing that he was being chased by a UFO (October 21, 1978 ). • Frederick Valentich was on a 125 mile training flight in his single engine Cessna 182 along the coast of Bass Strait when he told air traffic controllers in Melbourne that he was being buzzed by a UFO with 4 bright lights about 1000 feet above him.

  34. Hudson Valley Sightings • The Hudson River valley of New York state was the site of one of the most widely witnessed and extended episodes of UFO activity ever. • Literally thousands of witnesses observed the objects, and many photos and videos were taken. • The “siege” begot over 7,000 documented and investigated sightings of a boomerang-shaped craft or crafts moving silently through the sky over New York and Connecticut between 1982 and 1995.
