Does the Bible contain contradictions? • Skeptics claim the Bible is full of contradictions. • Google “Bible contradictions.” • Making the charge doesn’t prove the case. • Contradiction • Cannot be and not be • Must be speaking of the same person, place or thing at the same time and in the same sense

  3. Contradiction? • The door is open. The door is closed. • Lazarus was poor. Lazarus was rich. • Ted Cruz is an American citizen. Ted Cruz is a Canadian citizen.

  4. Principles for dealing with alleged discrepancies: • Is the same person, place or thing under consideration?

  5. Same person, place or thing • Zechariah, son of Berechiah – Matthew 23:35 vs. 2 Chronicles 24:20-21 • Could be talking about Zechariah the minor prophet (some 400 years later during the time of Ezra) Zechariah 1:1 • Could be a Zechariah from the first century. • We don’t know.

  6. Same person, place or thing • Uzziah or Azariah? • Matthew 1:8, “Uzziah begot Jotham” • 2 Kings 15:7, Jotham is Azariah’s son • Many people in the Bible were known by 2 names: • Abram – Abraham, Jacob – Israel, Saul – Paul • Uzziah and Azariah are the same person. 2 Kings 15:27, 32

  7. Same person, place or thing • Matthew 5:1 vs. Luke 6:17-49, Sermon on the Mount or Sermon on a Flat Place? • Could be 2 different occasions • Could be the same occurrence (flat place on a mountain)
