  1. You Li, Tsz-Yam Lau, Peter Fox, W. Randolph Franklin Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, NY, USA 5D-ODETLAP: A NOVEL FIVE-DIMENSIONAL COMPRESSION METHOD ON TIME-VARYING MULTIVARIABLE GEOSPATIAL DATASET AutoCarto 2010, Orlando, FL

  2. Challenge • Fact: • Large amount of data is provided by agencies , including National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). These data keeps a record of earth’s changing environment, and support numerous research and operational applications • Problem: • These data come in high dimension, usually 3D, 4D even 5D. • No special-purpose compression method for high dimensional geospatial data. Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010

  3. 5D Oceanographic Data World ocean atlas 2005 • A real world marine 5D is provided by NODC (National Oceanographic Data Center). • WOA05 is a set of objectively analyzed (1 degree grid) climatological fields of in situ temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, Apparent Oxygen Utilization (AOU), percent oxygen saturation, phosphate, silicate, and nitrate at standard depth levels for annual, seasonal, and monthly compositing periods for the World Ocean. Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010

  4. 5D-ODETLAP 4D reconstruction: Data of size n4 (n by n by n by n) n4unknowns { Zi,j,k,t} Exact equations for all the k known-height positions Averaging equations for all n4 positions Weighting between the two sets of equations Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010

  5. 5D-ODETLAP Outline Flow Chart Pseudo Code Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010

  6. 5D-ODETLAP Optimization Forbidden zone Normal equations Li, Lau, Stuetzle, Fox, Franklin - 3D Oceanographic Data Compression - ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2010

  7. 5D-ODETLAP Iterations Mean Error Max Error Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010

  8. Result Comparison This table shows the performance comparison between 5D-ODETLAP and 3D-SPIHT on the derived dataset. Mean error is the average of all four 4D datasets’ mean percentage error and similarly, Max error is the maximum of all four 4D data’s maximum percentage error. Each point uses 4 bytes to store its value in single precision; thus total size of each dataset is 10.13Mb. Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010

  9. On-going Work Replacing MATLAB linear solver with Conjugate Gradient Solver implemented by CUDA technology. Applying 4D reconstruction process on 4D FMRI(Functional magnetic resonance imaging) data. Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010

  10. Questions? Questions? Li, Lau, Fox, Franklin - 5D ODETLAP - AutoCarto 2010
