What is myocean

What is « MyOcean » ?

  • MyOcean is the implementation project of the European Marine Core Service, aiming at deploying during years 2009-2011 the first integrated pan-European capacity for ocean monitoring and forecasting.

  • Invented by the main European players in ocean monitoring and forecasting (the ones involved in GODAE), co-funded by them and the European Commission

GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France

Myocean is

MyOcean is …

  • … a European PROJECT

    • A European Commission FP7 project from the « GMES » program, coordinated by MERCATOR OCEAN

    • 3 years : 2009 - 2010 - 2011

    • Total cost 60 M€, with 33 M€ from the European Commission

      2009 – 2010 – 2011

  • … a European SERVICE

    • The main component of the GMES « Marine Core Service »

    • Global & Regional Ocean monitoring and forecasting

      Marine Core Service

  • … a European TEAM

    • 60 partners, out of 28 countries ; an effort of ~200 person/year

A post-GODAE initiative

  • The MyOcean idea has been prepared all along the GODAE years

  • It is built upon the GODAE legacy

GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France

Myocean a european example of post godae initiatives

  • What are the main choices we’ve made to define MyOcean ?

  • They will drive our post-GODAE years in Europe

GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France

The challenge

The challenge1

The challenge

  • Our challenge is SUSTAINABILITY

    • USERS

    • INTEGRATION

    • PROGRESS

  • Find the new balance, between

    • Research & Operational

    • Production & Service

    • Europe (collective) and nations (individuals)

    • Patrons and field players

GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France

The main idea

The main idea

GOAL: identify where the group could add value

(… not far from the « GODAE common »)

A european marine core service seeking for the european added value

A European Marine “core” serviceseeking for the “european added value”

  • In 3 years, create the maximum “core” value for the users by providing on a reliable basis “the common denominator data for all users in the marine sector”

GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France

The myocean market

The MyOcean market

GOAL: Collect and understand users’ requirements, to adjust the MyOcean offer

(… it was discussed in GODAE / St Petersburg)

GODAE Final Symposium, 12 – 15 November 2008, Nice, France

Myocean the post godae

MyOcean & the post-GODAE

  • MyOcean needs in the post-GODAE phase

    • An international place where science & operational & patrons meet, and share objectives and ideas

    • An international and skilled community to define methods, usages, formats, … that will become the international standards

    • An international and skilled community to share results and be challenged towards progress

    • Strong international foundations for the « core » observation & modelling & core service infrastructures
