  6. Socio-cultural • Attitudes to FL: • e.g., post “Iron Curtain” • Socio-economic status: • higher vs lower • Views of language and learning: • prestige of BE • repetition, memorisation, etc

  7. Historical/political • Language status: • effect of English as an International Language (EIL) on FL learning in UK, vs. learning of EFL in e.g., Denmark, the Netherlands, etc • Political climate: • “Open Door” policy -> internationalisation

  8. Geographic • Proximity to where FL spoken • MT or second language (SL) situations (i.e., where target language present outside classroom) vs. FL situation (target language not present outside classroom)

  9. Economic/technological • Economic and scientific development: • > demand for EFL • Teaching/learning resources: • from blackboard to electronic whiteboard

  10. Educational • Starting age: the younger the better? • No. of hours (“drip-feed” vs intensive) • Goals • e.g., grammar/exam-oriented, or communicative, or both • Roles of teachers • “sage on the stage” vs. “guide by the side” • Institutions • BANA vs TESEP
