  1. THE KEROSENE ALTERNATIVE

  2. PRESENTATION What are the alternatives? What do they do? How do they do it? Warnings for diesel and kerosene Health & safety advantages Typical results Boral Case Studies What are the costs?

  3. What is the alternative? • Fortunately for the industry there are now very real and cost effective alternatives that are far more efficient and safe to use. • With regulations now starting to be enforced the industry is actively engaged in finding solutions to assist in their collective compliance The Unauthorised Discharge Regulations 2004 of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 make it illegal to discharge substances, such as hydrocarbons, to groundwater or the stormwater system

  4. Where can they be applied? • Products that will eliminate risk of “carry back” or “dead load” in trucks and pavers. • Products that improve asphalt release to Drag slats, conveyors and coco pans. • Products that stop pick up on pneumatic and steel rollers and acts as anti-adhesion • Products that will remove bitumen overspray and build up on trucks, tankers, pavers, rollers, spreaders, spray bars and ancillary equipment • Products that will remove sludge and baked on bitumen in tankers • Products that can be used in laboratory standards tests

  5. How does it do it? • New technology allows low volatility products derived from alternative sustainable sources to produce superior results without the traditionally accepted risks. • This technology is now available to address the environmental issues surrounding the removal of and management of bitumen and asphalt • The products we use are derived primarily from various natural edible plant oils, and are free of VOC’s and the customary traditional solvents

  6. The safe solution • These products can be adopted as a complete replacement for diesel and kerosene. This results in: • Removing risk of exposure to toxic chemicals and noxious fumes • Eliminating fire hazards and risks of explosion • Safer working environments • Safe handling, storage and usage

  7. Product descriptions • Load Release eliminates risk of “carry back” or “dead load” in trucks and pavers • Load Release improves asphalt release to Drag slat, conveyors and coco pans • Load Release and Aqueous A1that stop pick up on pneumatic and steel rollers • BARC to wash down bitumen trucks, tankers, pavers, rollers, spreaders, spray bars, ancillary equipment and cleaning out radiatiors. • DTW to remove sludge and baked on bitumen in tankers • DTW used in laboratory standards tests

  8. Product descriptions BARC to remove spatter from concrete kerbing and other fixings

  9. Improved efficiencies • These include: • effectiveness • fast acting, deep penetration • simple and safe application methods • significantly reduced amounts required • easier and safer handling • no disposal issues • no risk of asphalt contamination • cost savings • quality finished product

  10. BARC chemistry • The proprietary products in BARC have a similar molecular structure to bitumen, resulting in the rapid penetration of the bitumen down to the adhered surface. • Spreading itself between the bitumen and the hard surface it effectively creates a separation

  11. Health and safety concerns

  12. Comparable usage:

  13. FULTON HOGAN Product application The application method uses compressed air and a venturi system, this enables application volumes uses as little as 6 litres to completely clean the vehicle.

  14. Cleaning of manhole covers in situ

  15. BARC BENEFITS

  16. BARCVERSATILITY

  17. TRADITIONAL BITUMEN REMOVAL PROCESS THE BARC BITUMEN REMOVAL PROCESS

  18. Load Release benefits driver comments : • “used less” • “product being thicker sticks to the sides better” • “working as well or better” • “asphalt all came out, I didn’t have to clean up” • “product worked well, with a good smell”

  19. Sludge removal • there are many methods used to remove sludge and baked on coke, many are labour intensive DTW process • involves the use of a revolutionary new product developed in Perth coupled with a “hands off” cleaning system, that reduces mans exposure to fumes and liquids in a potentially dangerous environment

  20. Laboratory use • the current use of kerosenes and turpentines for bitumen separation can now be replaced with the safe alternative DTW

  21. Application advantages The competitive advantage of BARC, LOAD RELEASE and DTW: • high concentration of active ingredients • highly efficient application methods • rapid application • full even coverage

  22. Cost savings BARC: • Up to 40% reduction in labour • Over 200% reduction in equipment downtime • Over 400% less product used • Reduced runoff • Hazardous liquids disposal reduced • Reduced maintenance costs

  23. Cost savings • LOAD RELEASE: • application time reduced by 50% • quantities used reduced by 30-50% • does not affect asphalt consistency • does not soften seal

  24. Available sizes & equipment • 20 litres • 200 litres • 1000 litres • purpose made product applicators
