  5. Borrowing Process SFU • Book equipment in advance • Do all necessary pre-production work • Borrow equipment • Take photos • Upload and clear camera memory • Return equipment This workshop presentation can be found at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/equipment Still Camera Workshop

Borrowing SFU • Book for the current or following week • in person or by phone 778-782-7411 • Bookings are recorded in the booking binder on the Library counter • You can sign up only once on each booking sheet • (for example, one booking a week for a still camera) This workshop presentation can be found at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/equipment Still Camera Workshop

  7. Borrowing SFU • You can pick up booked equipment between 1:00pm and 3:00pm • Loan Period is overnight • Return before 12:00 noon • (Friday loans are due Monday) • Keep your receipt for the correct due date and time • Check all components are included and in working order before leaving the Library This workshop presentation can be found at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/equipment Still Camera Workshop

Returning SFU • Make sure all kit components are returned • Return to the library staff -do not leave on the counter • Notify staff of any damaged or missing parts • Return on time • Late fees $3 per HOUR, up to a maximum of $200 total This workshop presentation can be found at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/equipment Still Camera Workshop

General Responsibilities SFU • Assemble and test all equipment before leaving the Library • Use equipment at your own risk • Know how to operate the equipment correctly • Minimize wear and tear on the equipment • Notify a Library staff member immediately if the equipment is not working properly • Return the equipment on time so other students can borrow it This workshop presentation can be found at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/equipment Still Camera Workshop

Equipment Damage and Loss SFU • You are responsible for any equipment you borrow • You will have to pay for the repair or replacement of equipment damaged while on loan to you • Camera repairs generally range from $50 -$300 • You will have to pay the full replacement cost of any equipment that is lost or stolen while it is on loan to you • Camera replacement generally ranges from $500 -$2500 This workshop presentation can be found at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/equipment Still Camera Workshop

  12. Camera Kit Components Memory Card The Camera USB Cable Hard or Soft Camera Case Battery + Charger

Camera Care Cautions • Do not drop the camera • Keep away from liquids and moisture • Keep away from heat and magnetic sources • Do not force memory cards, batteries or lenses in or out of the camera • Do not hit or shake the camera • Keep camera in a safe dry place when not in use • If in doubt, read the manual or ask for help !

  14. Loading the Memory Card • Make sure the camera is off • Slide the slot cover in the direction of the arrow to open it • Push the memory card as shown until it locks into place • Do not touch the terminals on the back of the memory card

  15. Removing the Memory Card • To remove the memory card, push on it until it clicks and spring releases. • Close the memory card cover securely ‘Click’

  16. Loading the Battery • Be sure that the camera power is off • Slide the battery cover lock in the direction of the arrow and open the cover • Insert the batteries – follow the correct direction • Close the cover • Library provides rechargeable batteries – one battery per camera

  17. Lens Cleaning • Only used approved debris free lens cloth or brush and lens air blower • Blow debris from lens surface • Use cloth and rub gently in a circular motion, don’t force

  23. Resolution • Olympus XZ-1 • 3648 x 2736 (10 megapixels) • Can take photos in multiple sizes • To adjust, press the FUNCTION/OK button while in a shooting mode. Go to sixth menu item with the 4-way controller and choose from the different sizes: LF,LN,MF,SN • Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 • 3264×2448 (8.1 megapixels) • Can take photos in three sizes • To adjust, press the MENU/SET button while in a shooting mode. Go to PICT.SIZE with the 4-way controller and choose from the different sizes: 7M,4.5M,2.5M *Note: Both cameras shoot in RAW. A camera raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor, allowing the user to process the image with computer software.

  24. Compression • More compression means: Lower quality images • More photos will fit on a given storage device • Generally most cameras have Fine or Normal as a selection • Olympus XZ-1 • To adjust, press the FUNCTION/OK button while in a shooting mode. Go to sixth menu item with the 4-way controller and choose from the different sizes: LF,LN,MF,SN • (Large FINE) , (Large NORMAL) Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 To adjust, press the MENU/SET button while in a shooting mode. Go to QUALITY with the 4-way controller and choose from the different sizes: FINE NORMAL

Shooting Mode Dial Olympus XZ-1 • iAUTOmode: • Used for quick and easy photos in ideal conditions with limited adjustments • P (Program mode): • Ideal for making extra adjustments • e.g. overriding the AUTO flash modes or exposure settings • A (Aperture-Priority mode) • The use of aperture-priority mode is basically for controlling Depth of Field • The larger the aperture (smaller number), the shallower the depth of field which makes the main subjects stand out Lumix DMC-FZ18

Shooting Mode Dial Olympus XZ-1 • S (Shutter-Priority mode): • When users want more control over how to photograph a moving subject • The faster the Shutter Speed, the less motion blur • M (Manual mode) • Ability to control all adjustable functions of the camera • Flash • Focus • Aperture • Shutter Speed • White Balance • ISO Lumix DMC-FZ18

  27. Flash and Macro Olympus XZ-1 • While not in iAUTO mode, you can adjust the Flash and Macro settings to be auto, on, or off • Flash: • Both Cameras have a pop-up flash • Using the flash button, cycle through auto, red-eye, on, or off • Macro Mode: • Use for subjects between ~5 and 45cm away from the camera • (Olympus) Press the MACRO button and then INFO to select Macro or Super Macro • (Lumix) Press the MACRO button to focus on the subject Lumix DMC-FZ18

Exposure Olympus XZ-1 • While not in iAUTO mode, you can adjust the Exposure settings from ±2.0 • Darken or brighten a scene by overriding the auto exposure: • Press the EXPOSURE button • Press the left or right side of the controller to decrease or increase the exposure value Lumix DMC-FZ18 -2 -1 0 +1 +2

  29. Exposure • Watch the exposure change in the LCD monitor • Areas of a photo where information is lost can be due to extreme brightness "blown-out highlights" or darkness “crust blacks” • Areas of the image in each exposure obtain significant information • e.g. sky, mountain, trees 0 EV -2.0 EV +2.0 EV

White Balance • Often you need to adjust the camera’s white balance, depending on the color of the light you are shooting in • Use factory AUTO, presetmodes, or CUSTOM which is full manual • Olympus XZ-1 • To adjust, press the FUNCTION/OK button while in a shooting mode. Go to third menu item with the 4-way controller and choose from the different settings • Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 • To adjust, press the MENU/SET button while in a shooting mode. Go to W.BALANCE with the 4-way controller and choose from the different settings *Note: When using custom setting, user is required a white sheet of paper

ISO ISO • ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. • The lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain. • Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations without flash to get faster shutter speeds, however the cost is noisier shots. • While not in iAUTO mode, you can adjust the ISO settings to be AUTO, AUTO with max, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, etc • Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 • To adjust, press the MENU/SET button while in a shooting mode. Go to INTELLIGENT ISO or SENSITIVITY with the 4-way controller and choose from the different settings: • AUTO, 100-1600 • Olympus XZ-1 • To adjust, press the FUNCTION/OK button while in a shooting mode. Go to first menu item with the 4-way controller and choose from the different settings: • AUTO, 100-6400

  32. Digital Zoom • Older digital cameras have this feature • Can DEGRADE image quality by enlarging a smaller area of pixels then the full frame • Basically, the cameras outdated software zooms into the image causing pixilation and distortion • To disable on the Lumix: • Press the MENU/SET button while in a shooting mode. Go to D.ZOOM with the 4-way controller and select: OFF

  33. Viewing and Deleting • Olympus XZ-1 • To VIEW, press the PLAYBACK button. Use the 4-way controller to cycle through images. • To DELETE, press the down button of the 4-way controller, and select ERASE. • Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 • To VIEW, switch to PLAYBACK on the shooting dial. Use the 4-way controller to cycle through images. • To DELETE, press the TRASH button and confirm the removal.

  34. Camera to Computer • Connect using a USB cable • Both the Olympus and Lumix require a proprietary USB cable to connect to the computer • The Windows machines at SFU should automatically recognize the camera as a storage device • The Macintosh machines at SFU might not, but you can easily open iPhoto to transfer photos • An alternative is to use an SD card reader on the machine or borrow a reader from the library Olympus XZ-1 Lumix DMC-FZ18

  35. Software / Editing • Photoshop • Resize and edit photos • Save files with different compression types and intended for different purpose like print, web or mobile. • JPG (size), GIF (animate), PNG (transparency), etc • For web intended image; different compression types have different results within browsers • Dreamweaver / HTML • Creating webpages to insert images and share them online • Flash • Compile multiple images into one animation

  36. Packing up • Erasing the memory card • Olympus XZ-1 • To FORMAT, press the PLAYBACK button, then press the MENU button. Use the 4-way controller to ERASE, then press OK. Select ALL ERASE and confirm. • Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 • To FORMAT, switch to PLAYBACK on the shooting dial. Press MENU/SET button and use the 4-way controller to FORMAT and confirm. • Make sure the camera is turned off when placed in the case • Make sure all camera components and accessories are included • Return on time
