  2. On-site test generators have always been compromises • AC resonance test sets are heavy and demand high feeding power • in VLF test sets the voltage stress (dV/dt) is much different from the actual operating conditions • Oscillating tests sets need a large storage capacitor and a higher charging voltage than the test voltage

  3. A generator with a hybrid waveshape has the advantages combined • Charging with 0.1Hz (VLF) keeps the power demand low • Testing with an oscillation of about 60Hz yields results similar to the operating conditions • Oscillating construction has a simple setup • Using the cable capacitance for energy storage eliminates the need for a storage capacitor and higher charging voltage We called this generator “Complex Discharge Analyzer” (CDA)

  4. Limitations of the CDA test voltage • It is optimized for Partial Discharge testing • It is less suited for power factor (tan) and voltage withstand tests

  5. CDA Generator Schematic

  6. Principle of Operation • The cable will be slowly charged up to 2..3x V0 • Then it will be discharged via an inductor • The frequency of the oscillation is 40..80Hz • At the first half cycle the PD signals will be recorded • Usually five shots of each voltage step are taken

  7. CDA Voltage shape

  8. Data Processing • PD signals will be recorded with a high-speed digitizer (100 MSa; 8 Bit) • Data will be digitally filtered and automatically analyzed • PD distribution maps will be generated, showing the location, magnitude and repetition rate of the PD failures for each test voltage step • The PD location uses the “Time-Domain-Reflectometry”, similar to other test systems

  9. PD Calibration Impulse

  10. Recorded Raw Data
