  1. Einstein Chapter It’s all relative Ch 18 Reprise – 23 in the old version

  2. Qui et Que • These are little connecting words you need to know how to use and read and use and say and use and translate.

  3. Qui usually means WHO • Just make the verb that will follow immediately after it agree with the ‘antecedent’ (the thing that comes before) • IE Les fillesqui SONT jolies ne chantentjamais. • Je voudrais un ordinateur qui EST facile à utiliser.

  4. QUE works the sameway • Exceptthatyouneed a SUBJECT and a VERB right afterit… • EX, le garçon que j’ai vu • Les filles que nous avons invitées • La robe que tu as portée • L’homme que tu aimes • Sharka, le devoir que tu ne fais jamais est important.

  5. Give me an AY, I mean ah, à…. • You cansaythings in French thatwemight not say in English and itwillmakeyou a good French talker: • L’homme à qui je parle • La femme à qui je donne le livre • Les étudiants à qui nous avons pensés

  6. Okay: nowitgetstricky

  7. Whenyouwant to say « Which robe do youpréfer? » what do you do?

  8. Lift thineeyes onto the wall • You know this. It’s the word for which: it has to agree in gender and numberwith the thingyou’reasking about. • Quel quelle quels quelles

  9. Weeis relative • well, the French saywhich a lot more thanwe do. In fact, weoftenleaveit out, but the French do not. You’veseenthisbefore in reading, etc…. • IF youwant to saywhich in the middle of the sentence, you have to change quel a wee bit.

  10. EXCEPT • Quel quelle quels quelles • Lequel laquelle lesquels lesquelles

  11. okay • There’susually a wordthatgoesalongwithit….for example in English: • The subject in which I aminterested • The friends on which I rely • The cousin atwhose house I live • The table on which I put mythings

  12. Wedon’t talk likethisat all • And that’s the hard part

  13. If you think of Yoda-speak or the Queen’s English when you work on these structures, you are half way there! • When you combine two or more thoughts or structures in a sentence, it’s ‘relative’ and needs the correct connecting word. • You have to learn to say ‘to which’ ‘of which’ ‘from which’ etc. • The key is do not end clauses or sentences with prepositions – use the chart on the next page.

  14. Pleasememorizethischart and youwillstart to notice iteverywhereyouread. Trust me. It’severywhere. • Quel quelle quels quelles • +lequel +laquelle +lesquels +lesquelles • Auquel à laquelle auxquels auxquelles • Dont dontdontdont • Duquel de laquelle desquels desquelles
