  3. Review Consonants М, м П, п К, к Т, т Д, д Н, н Ч, ч Vowels А, а О, о Э, э Е, е Я, я Which indicate the preceding consonant is hard? Soft?

  4. Grammar Overview • O or A at the beginning of a word or before the stress is pronounced as a weak ‘a’ • In most cases Ч, чis pronounced as ‘ch’ like in cheese. *Exceptions such as Чтo (shto?) should be memorized.

  5. Negation • не = not. Shows negation. • Это не Аня. • Это не ма́ма. Exercise 1-18 Это апте́ка? Нет, э́то не апте́ка. Это дом

  6. New Letters Consonants • Б б‘b’ as in book • С с‘s’ in sound • Р р ‘r’ in rest • Й й ‘y’ in yes Vowels • У у ‘u’ as in tube • ы - no English equivalent Note: у and ы indicate that the preceding consonant is hard • Link to Handwriting Demo

  7. The Soft Sign Ь The soft sign indicates that the preceding consonant is soft.

  9. Remember! • а, о, у, э, ы indicate that the preceding consonant is hard. • я, е, ь (the soft sign) indicate that the preceding consonant is soft.

  10. Greetings (1-24) • День - Day, afternoon • До́брый день! Good Afternoon! (from 12 pm to 6 pm) • Утро - Morning • До́брое у́тро! – Good Morning! (from 6 am to 12 pm)

  11. Taking leave Пока́! Bye! So long! (Informal, for friends only)

  17. Gender of Nouns Russian nouns are classified according to grammatical gender: • Masculine • Feminine • Neuter

  18. Gender of Nouns • Masculine nouns end in a consonant, -ь, or –й дом банк день май • Feminine nouns end in -аor –я ру́чка Ка́тя Important!: nouns that end in -а or -я and refer to male persons are masculine: Ваня, папа

  20. Pronunciation of unstressed E Pronounce unstressed e in syllables before the stress as ‘ee’ in English ‘tree’ or ‘see’: секре́т секрета́рь семья́́ сестра́

  30. Review of gender Russian nouns are classified according to grammatical gender: • Masculine - ends in a consonant, -ь, or -й • Feminine - ends in -а or -я • Neuter - ends in -о or –е

  31. Review of gender Important!: nouns that end in -а or –я and refer to male persons are masculine. Don’t forget!: мой modifies a masculine noun моя́ modifies a feminine noun.

  32. Memorize, memorize, and memorize some more! Memorize all of the vocabulary on page 19. You’ll find that you recognize many of the words!
