  2. Geography of the Arabian Peninsula • Fertile areas along the coast. • Tigris and Euphrates river system to the east. • Interior is desert

  3. At an Oasis • Oasis: a small area in a desert that is watered by springs or wells

  4. At an Oasis • Importance of Oases • Nomads lived in the peninsula. • Travelled in regular patterns, following water and grazing land. • Moved from oasis to oasis

  5. At an Oasis • Towns grew around oasis because • There was available water • That is where nomads met to trade camel meat and milk for grain and manufactured goods.

  6. Nomadic Life • Lived in close family groups with several generations. • Family groups joined to form a tribe. • Each tribe was led by a leader called a shaikh

  7. Nomadic Life Religion • Were polytheistic • Made idols to represent lesser gods

  8. Nomadic Life Feuds • Feuds were fought between tribes over water and grazing lands. • Some large tribes would protect caravans.

  9. Towns and Trade Three different types of communities: • City dwellers • Agricultural villages • Nomads • All three traded with each other for things they needed.

  12. The Holy City of Mecca Why it became an important trade city: • Crossroads of two important trade routes. • Had a good supply of fresh water.

  13. The Holy City of Mecca The Ka’bah • A cube-shaped shrine supposedly built by Abraham as a house of worship. • Idols placed there • A tradition of visiting the Ka’bah and walking around it.

  14. The Holy City of Mecca The Quraysh • Tribe had the role of keepers of the Ka’bah. • This allowed them to become very powerful and wealthy.

  15. The Holy City of Mecca The Quaysh • Created treaties with other tribes to protect pilgrims and traders. • By 500, Mecca is the most successful trade center in Arabia.
