  2. Background Launched in December 2009 by Oxfam with funding from the Gates Foundation. Worked in partnership with: • Nationally: ATA, SOS Sahel, ACDI/ VOCA, IIRR, Agri-Hub Ethiopia, Fair and Sustainable Ethiopia and Addis Ababa University. • Internationally: Coady, Care, ODI, IFPRI,SNV, IRAM, and University of Florida. Work on the project will be concluding in December 2012.

  3. What is the ‘Researching Women’s Collective Action’ project? A research, learning and communications project on women smallholders’ collective action in Ethiopia, Mali, and Tanzania. To identify: • the conditions • types of organisation • strategies of support …that enable women to take on strategic roles in markets in ways that increase women’s incomes, assets and empowerment.

  4. Why research Women’s Collective Action? The research will help women reap the benefits of collective action in agricultural marketsby: • Identifying what forms of collective action work for women, and why. • Creating a base of evidence to improve strategies • Informing and communicating more effective strategies.

Process and next steps • Today: • We share the main results. • With you we discuss together why we all think this may be the case. • And what are the implications of these findings for what we do? Next steps: • Feedback from national seminars in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Mali. • Feedback from international researchersin October. • Final synthesis report in December 2012.
