Different Types of Communication AGGRESSIVE: • Very self-centered • Mock or speak in a negative tone • Domineering • Sarcastic tone of voice ASSERTIVE: • State their opinion • Use “I” statements • Focuses on problem solving • Answers in thought out mature responses PASSIVE: • Shy • Will never voice their opinion • Avoids conflict at all costs • Afraid to respond to seem “foolish” or “disliked”

  3. GOOD LISTENING SKILLS • Give Full Attention to Person Speaking • Focus on the speaker’s message • Indicate your Interest • Remember what the Speaker Said • Use positive body language

REFUSAL SKILLS Refusal Skills are Part of Effective Communication • Helps you not contradicts your values • Helps you out weight possible outcomes • You need to stay firm in stance to get point across You will need them to different elements in your life: • Drinking • Being a bystander • An activity that can lead to bodily harm

  6. CONFLICT Conflict: Is any disagreement, struggle, or fight. Results from: • Lack of communication between two people • Lack of different needs met Use T.A.L.K as a guide to resolve conflict: • T- Time Out • A- Allow the other person to speak • L- Let each person ask questions and clarify • K- Keep brainstorming till both parties are happy.

  7. DECISIONS ABOUT SEXUAL BEHAVIORS ABSTINENCE: • is a deliberate decision to avoid sexual activity and/or any dangerous subsidence that may cause you bodily harm • What is celibacy? SEXUAL INTERCOURSE: • Refers to vaginal, oral or anal sex SEXUAL ACTIVITY: • Refers to any form of stimulation to genital area INTIMACY: • Refers to the closeness between two people (which develops over time)

DECISIONS ABOUT SEXUAL BEHAVIORS (CONTINUED) Individuals may be ready to have sex if: • They are comfortable enough to talk about the decision with their partner: Are my partner’s reasons for wanting sex the same as mine? Will sex have the same meaning for both of us? Can I trust my partner not to hurt, disappoint, or betray me? • They have sufficient information to help protect themselves from pregnancy (if desired) and infection. • They have considered the pros and cons of becoming sexually involved, and are making this decision solely for themselves. • They have considered the potential consequences of taking intimacy to this level. • NO ONE should be pressured to be sexual before they feel ready.
