Where can you start • Be aware of potential employers in your area of interest: • Long term conditions • Children, family, Public health • Acute care and hospital • First contact and urgent care • Mental health and psychosocial • Manage your job search • make sure your CV is up to date • Take advantage of careers support available to you

  6. Job Searching - Print • RCN Bulletin • Journals • Relevant journals to your chosen area • Eg. Management, practice nursing, occupational health nursing • Search the RCN website for A-Z list of journals • Newspapers (jobs online also) • Eg Guardian jobs – will send job alerts • Local press

Job Searching - Online • Search using online search engines – use key words • Ensure the site is secure and reputable before posting your CV or personal details • Applications • Draft online applications and supporting statements first – check spelling, safe format • Sign up to job alerts • Job sites online eg: • http://jobs.nhs.uk • http://jobseekers.direct.gov.uk/

Job Searching – Social Media • Be aware of the power of social media. • Social Media and the NMC Code http://www.nmc-uk.org/Nurses-and-midwives/Advice-by-topic/A/Advice/Social-networking-sites/ • The Code states that nurses and midwives must "uphold the reputation of your profession at all times" (NMC 2008), while students must "uphold the reputation of your chosen profession at all times" (NMC 2009a).

Making the most of opportunities - Networking • You network every day • people you talk to on the way to work, shopping, at the dentist • Use your communication skills to build professional networks • Remember first impressions • Showing interest • What are the 5 key positive points about you

  14. Activity • Spend a few minutes sharing with the person next to you: • Why you are here at the Jobs Fair • What you would like to achieve by the end of the day • What positive points can you tell employers about yourself

  15. Getting the most out of the jobs fair • Plan what you say to employers • Pick less busy times • Be positive • Leave a copy of your CV and contact details • Always take contact details of the person you have spoken with to follow up after

  16. Networking • Talk to a potential employer – on the phone or arrange an informal visit • Follow up • Talk to someone in the career area you would like to work • Use the jobs fair to build your networks
