Did this text make you feel that the USSR should receive more credit for victory in Europe?

America Inches Toward War • 1939: USA began selling war supplies to Britain “cash and carry” program • 1940: In response to Japan’s continued expansion in Asia and the Pacific, USA freezes Japanese assets (they can’t access their money/property in the USA) and cut them off from OIL (embargo) • 1941: Lend-Lease program providing Britain, USSR, China with US warships in exchange for use of their naval bases • Dec 7 1941: Japan attacks Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii to destroy ships and planes • Dec 11 1941: Italy and Germany declare war on USA • America officially declares war on Axis

Opening a Second Front • 1943: Germans already struggling in fight against Russia with failure at Stalingrad, Moscow secure • 1943: British get Blitz payback with the RAF bombing German-held industrial cities • 1944: Soviets now pushing back against Axis, conquering across Eastern Europe and taking territory from the Nazis • June 6 1944: Allied “D-Day” beach invasion of Normandy, France • Developed technology to transport tanks over water • extremely deadly, but allies pushed through into Nazi held France

Allied Victory in Europe • 1944: Battle of the Bulge- Hitler’s last big counterattack in Belgium failed to defeat Allied advance • Being attacked from both East and West strained German military strength • 1945: British firebombing of Dresden, Germany killed 135,000 men, women, and children • May 8 1945: Germany surrendered • Hitler committed suicide days before
