  2. Courses you take now matter • College admissions counselors are looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build upon in college. • Take at least 5 solid academic classes each year • Scheduling for next year is beginning now

  5. Foreign languages • Solid credits in foreign language shows a willingness to stretch beyond the basics. WCPS requires at least 2 credits in the same language for the university of Maryland completer. • Some 4 year colleges like to see 3 credits of the same foreign language. • The third level of all foreign languages is a weighted credit- 4.72 • Languages offered at North- Spanish, French and german

  6. Is Advanced placement (AP) for you? • AP is college in a high school setting. The classes offer knowledge and skills to help you in college. • Scoring well on the AP exam can get you college credit as well as help with class placement • Hands on learning- you will learn by sharing, Debate and interactive dialogue • The student driven learning in ap will give you an opportunity to learn how to express yourself before you get to a college campus • Curiosity, creativity and commitment • Motivation and determination • AP Potential- list of courses you have potential for based on students psat results

Challenge yourself! • Honors, AP, IB and Early College (through HCC) are a great way to build skills and be prepared for college. • Taking AP and IB exams can lead to college credit and advanced placement in college • Early college (through HCC) gives you an opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school • More than half of college freshmen report that they wish they had worked harder in high school

  8. Challenging coursework builds important skills • Stronger writing skills • Problem solving • Time management • Discipline • Build effective study habits • Show colleges you are willing to push yourself by increasing the rigor
