  1. Multicast beacon project status The why and what Egon Verharen Innovation manager, Advanced Services SURFnet Egon.verharen@surfnet.nl

  2. The Multicast Beacon http://dast.nlanr.net/projects/Beacon/ - See user contributions before installing source! - Windows app hard to install

  3. Beacon • Reserved our own worldwide unique multicast group: 233.4.79.11 • Reports on http://beta.surfnet.nl/beaconclient/central_loss.html • Sample config file: http://beta.surfnet.nl/beaconclient/beacon.conf.bigvideo • If the beacon is broken, that gives you higher confidence the problem is not just user error or host issues. • It is sometimes possible to use the beacon as the constantly active source and receiver for debugging. • It will not catch new/transient problems with source knowledge or state creation (the tree has been built).

  4. Other tools • rtpqual ftp://ftp.ee.lbl.gov/rtpqual.c • Simple Multiprotocol Multicast Signal Quality Meter • very useful for establishing a receiver (even if the multicast is not using RTP) • also useful for finding packet loss problems and whether they are periodic or not • If you know the group but not the port, you can use rtpqual to join with any port, then use tcpdump to find out which port the traffic is actually going to. • Graphical user interface developed byLaurence Kirchmeier (Merit) • Mtrace ftp://ftp.parc.xerox.com/pub/net-research/ipmulti/mtrace5.2.tar.gz • Simple host-based rpf check tool • Iperf http://dast.nlanr.net/projects/iperf • Source/client traffic generator that can generate multicast packets (requires access to device at both ends of path)

  5. Information Online • http://multicast.internet2.edu/ • http://multicast.internet2.edu/workshops/ohio/docs/internet2-multicast-workshop-july-2004-5-tshooting.ppt • http://multicast.internet2.edu/almeroth.pdf • http://www.ncne.nlanr.net/documentation/faq/mcast_eng_faq.html • http://dast.nlanr.net/projects/Beacon/ • GEANT: http://www.dante.net/nep/GEANT-MULTICAST/ • links to some troubleshooting docs and monitoring tools • ftp://ftpeng.cisco.com/ipmulticast.html • http://www.sprint.net/multicast/faq.html

  8. HD projects in Europe • TERENA (Trans European Research and Education Network Association) • Taskforce Video, Voice and Collaboration (TF-VVC) • HD over IP activity area • HD forum (Wiki) • http://hdwiki.i2cat.net/ • SIP framework for signalling HD transmission • HQ VC & Streaming workshop • Fall 2005, follow up from june 2001 • Development work • Peter Holub (Masaryk Univ & CESNET): VideoLAN HDV drivers (FreeBSD) • Colin Perkins (Univ Glasgow) (with USC ISI): Uncompressed HDTV transport • Demo’s: I2cat, SURFnet, Cesnet, Poland

  9. HD @ SURFnet • Goal: support use of HD in high-end visualisation and remote monitoring and -control apps (Medicine & High Energy Physics) • Status: technology assessment projects and demo’s • Experimentation • DV over IP, HD over IP • State of the art report (in Dutch ) • VC room • Demo’s: • User conference (dec. 2004) • HDSDI (HDcam in SMPTE SDTi) HD from ResearchChannel • MPEG-2 TS HD from GIST, Korea • MPEG-2 TS & WM HD from own Streaming server • VIOLA workshop (apr. 2005, Berlin) • MPEG-2 HD to workshop in Berlin • Together with i2CAT, CRC (Canada) • UCLP (user controlled lightpaths) • Opening regional net (jun. 2005, Zeeland) • MPEG-2 HD (from partners & head office, to location) • World exhibit presentation (aug. 2005, Aichi, Japan) • Interactive uncompressed HD (SMPTE 292) • SC2005, iGrid2005
