Changes During Adolescence • Growth Spurts: • Growing very quickly (birth to 6 months) • Adolescence (age of puberty to adulthood) Girls- 9-13 2 ½ inches, 10-13 pounds Boys-11-15 3-5 inches, 12-14 pounds Sexual Maturity: • Often referred to as Puberty • Able to Produce children • Organs function as adult organs • Traits passed from parents to children

Sexual Maturity: • Hormones –chemicals that cause the start of your growth spurt • Endocrine Glands- Makes hormones • All endocrine glands are the same in boys and girls except the sex glands • Girls- ovaries • Boys- Testes • Pituitary Gland- Master (controls others) • Girl Changes: Boy Changes: • Breasts Breasts may grow slightly • Hips widen Shoulders broaden • Voice deepens a little Voice deepens, cracks • Body hair growth Body hair growth • Menstruation Sperm is able to be released

  4. Skin Problems and Perspiration • Acne occurs when there are many pimples • Keep clean • Products can be purchased • See a Dermatologist • Sweat Glands • Increased through puberty • Odor- due to bacteria mixing with sweat on the skin • Deodorants/ shower/bathing- EVERYDAY

  5. Changes During Adolescence Emotional Changes Related to hormones May have feelings you are unsure about due to too much or too little hormones being released. Concerns with Appearance Self-Conscious Learn acceptance of oneself Everyone is unique Learn to accept others and show them respect Unmature—think only about themselves

Social Changes During Adolescence • Relationships will change • Parent and friends • Earn more independence by showing maturity and responsibility • Examples: homework, pet, following rules/guidelines • Period of constant adjustment • Most problems go away • Some are more serious talk to someone trusted about it.

  8. Genitals- organs outside the body • Foreskin/ Circumcision • Uneven growth of testicles • Scrotum may hang loosely or tighten and constrict based on temperature • Testicles make sperm about 60 days • Sperm production for entire life

Male physiology • Sperm start in the testicles • Go to the epididymis 18 hours to 10 days • Enter the vas deferens & are stored • Then the seminal vesicle gives off a fluid into a tube that runs through the prostate. • The mixture of fluids and sperm called semen • Semen moves to the urethra • Urine and semen can never leave the body at the same time

  10. Sperm • Sperm have a round like head, a thicker middle part and a tail. • Tail is important to be able to swim to fertilize an egg.

Body Functions • Tip of the penis is sensitive • Normal state of the penis it is soft and limp • When the penis is stimulated, blood fills the spongy tissues. • The penis then stiffens and extends away from the body= ERECTION • All ages have erections. • Can be caused by full bladder, or tight clothing. • Erections are often related to hormone changes and to sexual thoughts/ dreams.   12. Body Functions Continued • An ejaculation is very normal • Semen is released from the penis during an erection • Nocturnal emission (wet dream)- happens when a boy is asleep. Semen is ejaculated from the penis. • Not very much/ about a teaspoon. • Don’t be upset/ not controllable. Happens to many people.

  13. Taking care of your sex organs • Keep a healthy diet, exercise, clean your body parts. • Uncircumcised hygiene is very important • Injury protection as well (Contact Sports) • Ask parents or trusted adults any questions

Menstruation • First period is called Menarche • Pre-menstrual tension • May or may not experience • Menstruation Stops • About the age of 45-50 or older • Stop releasing eggs • Menopause • Pregnant women experience this temporarily • Lining is needed to nourish the developing baby. • Be very clean • Exercise helps relieve cramps and discomfort • Make sure to wipe from front to back to avoid bacteria.

Fertilization of the Egg • Millions of sperm pass into the vagina during an ejaculation. • Sperm swim through the cervix and into the uterus, then into the fallopian tubes. • Live up to 72 hours • If there is an egg in the tube at this time the sperm will try to join to the egg. • Hundreds try only one fertilizes the egg.

  20. Fertilization continued • Fertilization does not occur every time there is vaginal intercourse. • Egg stays in fallopian tube for 24 hours. • If sperm are present the egg can be fertilized. • If not no fertilization will take place • Menstruation will follow in about 14 days and the unfertilized egg leaves the body with unneeded blood and tissue.
