  2. An evening gown is a long flowing women's dress usually worn to a semi-formal or formal affair. Evening gowns are usually made of luxurious fabrics such as chiffon, velvet, satin, organza, etc. Silk is a popular fibre for many evening gowns.

  3. White tie occasions In the modern times, the evening gown is becoming more frequent in women's formal wear, even at white tie occasions, etiquette states that formal gowns must be worn.

  4. Black tie occasions Women usually wear evening gowns to blacktie occasions. In some cases a cocktail dress is acceptable.

  5. Cocktail dress A cocktail dress or cocktail gown is a woman's dress worn at cocktail parties, and semi-formal, or "black tie" occasions. At semi-formal occasions, a shorter-length cocktail dress may be worn. When gentlemen are in business suits, ladies wear dresses.

  6. A ball gown is the most formal women’s dress for social occasions. It is traditionally a gown made of luxurious fabric, delicately and exotically trimmed. The ball gown shape hasn’t changed since the 19th century.
