Introduction to Underage Drinking • Underage drinking - major public health problem • Alcohol - most used/abused drug by youth in U.S. more than tobacco & drugs • Illegal - 12-20 yrs 11% of all alcohol consumed in U.S. • 90% of that alcohol, consumed by binge drinking • Underage drinkers consume more drinks than adults • 190,000 ER visits for underage drinking injuries/yr

  4. Underage Drinking • School problems - higher absence, poor grades • Social problems - fighting, activity participation • Legal problems - arrest; DUI, assault • Unwanted, unplanned, unprotected sexual activity • Higher risk for suicide and homicide • Abuse of other drugs • Death

Health Issues: Short Term Effects • Alcohol – CNS depressant, think, speak, move slower • Cerebral cortex - slows info from senses • Frontal lobes - hard to control emotions & urges • Hippocampus - trouble remembering • Cerebellum - coordination, shaky hands, loss of balance • Blood pressure, hunger, thirst, urge to urinate increase • Body temperature and heart rate decrease • Hangover - headache, nausea, dehydration, dizziness, fatigue • During pregnancy = fetal alcohol syndrome = mental retardation & physical abnormalities

Health Issues: Long Term Effects • Damage the frontal lobes forever • Frontal lobes - important for planning, forming ideas, making decisions, using self-control • Damage hippocampus - hard to learn and hold on to knowledge • Permanent damage to vital organs - brain and liver • Addiction/alcoholism

  7. Addiction • Physical • Withdrawal symptoms - severe anxiety, tremors, diarrhea, hallucinations, convulsions • Psychological • Cravings • Overcome by desire for alcohol, lie & steal • No longer fun - depend on it • Life centered on alcohol - Not a choice

The Law • User consequences = Criminal record • Supplier consequences = Felony to knowingly provide alcohol to minors • Drinking and driving • DUI = BAC .08% breath, blood or urine test • Under 21 .02 % BAC = DUI penalties • DUI = mandatory suspension of driving license, classes, treatment • Vehicle confiscation • Ignition interlock device • Fines or incarceration

  9. Media’s Role • Advertisements • Targeting teens • Teens want to feel grown up • Ads make drinking look cool, popular, friends • To generate sales - makes products look appealing

  10. Other Countries • Societal norm • Alcohol is more available in Europe = more kids drink • Europe = more underage drunkenness, injury, rape, school problems than U.S. • Mexico – drinking age 18 • Germany – 16 • Jamaica - none

Learning Activity • Station 1: Alcohol Ball • Throw ball back and forth with partner • Then spin 10 times, squint eyes • Station 2: wRITEtHEsENTENCE • Neatly write “I promise I will never drink and drive” • spin 10 times, squint eyes • Station 3: Nuts my Bolt • One partner screw/unscrew nut & bolt • Wear gloves - loss of fine motor skills when inebriated
