  1. 1 Peter 1:6-9 6 You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials 7 so that the genuineness of your faith—more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

  2. 1 Peter 1:6-9 6 You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials 7 so that the genuineness of your faith—more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. • You have to take a long-term perspective to truly embrace suffering & discipline.

Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

  5. 1 Peter 1:10-12 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated. 11 They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when He testified in advance to the messianic sufferings and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Angels desire to look into these things.

  8. Why is biblical prophecy important? Fulfilled prophecy is God’s preferred argument

  9. Why is biblical prophecy important? • Deut. 18:18-22 -- 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. 19 I will hold accountable whoever does not listen to My words that he speaks in My name. 20 But the prophet who dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet must die.’ 21 You may say to yourself, ‘How can we recognize a message the Lord has not spoken?’ 22 When a prophet speaks in the Lord’s name, and the message does not come true or is not fulfilled, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him. Fulfilled prophecy is God’s preferred argument

  10. Why is biblical prophecy important? Fulfilled prophecy is God’s preferred argument • Isaiah 41:22-24 -- “Let them come and tell us what will happen. Tell us the past events, so that we may reflect on them and know the outcome, or tell us the future. 23 Tell us the coming events, then we will know that you are gods. Indeed, do something good or bad, then we will be in awe and perceive. 24 Look, you are nothing and your work is worthless. Anyone who chooses you is detestable.

  11. Why is biblical prophecy important? Fulfilled prophecy is God’s preferred argument • Isaiah 42:8-9 -- I am Yahweh, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another or My praise to idols. 9 The past events have indeed happened. Now I declare new events; I announce them to you before they occur.

  13. Why is biblical prophecy important? Fulfilled prophecy is God’s preferred argument Fulfilled prophecy was the primary argument used by Jesus • Luke 24:25-27 -- 25 Jesus said to them, “How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into His glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

  14. Why is biblical prophecy important? Fulfilled prophecy is God’s preferred argument Fulfilled prophecy was the primary argument used by Jesus Fulfilled prophecy was the primary argument used by Paul

  15. Why is biblical prophecy important? Fulfilled prophecy is God’s preferred argument Fulfilled prophecy was the primary argument used by Jesus Fulfilled prophecy was the primary argument used by Paul • Acts 17:2-4 -- 2 As usual, Paul went to the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and showing that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead: “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.” 4 Then some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a great number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number of the leading women.
